A. You're thinking of EXE 3.
B. Capcom America obviously likes to do random name changes to make people mad. "Burnman", my butt... _________________

It's not like it really matters. They're pretty much the same name meaning-wise, anyway. |

| As similar as it would have been for Tomahawkman to be re-named USAman. |

actually, a yamato is a type of spear, and what type of weapon does Yamatoman fight with? Exactly.
quote from GameFAQs: "Q: What the heck is a yamato, anyway?
A: A spear. Now tell me what a kuwanger is and we'll be even." |

I've searched for "yamato" everywhere and haven't seen it as a type of spear. Boat, ships, submarines, people, but no spears. GameFAQs isn't always correct, although I'm sure some people would pointlessly argue otherwise.

lol i found what kuwanger means.
Wikipedia wrote: | the name seems to be a play on words: Kuwagata is a japanese word meaning stag beetle. It's feasible that they combined "kuwagata" and "boomerang(er)" to come up with "Boomer Kuwanger", which then led to confused translators in America. | and just like Zan i have found nothing about Yamato being a spear >.> but i do see how it would be seen as such seeing as the hold Yamatoman from MM6 used a spear as well _________________

Yamatoman was used to represent someone with a pride for the 'nationality' he belongs into. Yamatoman is pretty much like saying Japanman because he takes 'pride and joy' on his background. It's information given in the CDs about Yamatoman, he hates english and loves japanese
Ranaming Tomahawkman to USAman would have been pretty unaccurate considering Tomahawkman represents the native americans and a big chunk of the USA population hardly identify themselves with it. Unlike a Yamato that is a word used to represent pride for its nationality and things belonging to it. So technically, renaming him Japanman makes sense even if we might deem it unnecesary.
It's like how if you call a person from the Mexico City "chilango" for us is like... being proud of being born in that city and we shout out how we're chilangos 'to the core'. _________________ Hecha en MÉXICO - Avatar by Me.

I was going by a somewhat more complete definition of Yamato from my Age of Empires sourcebook. "The name Yamato comes from the region of Japan that was the home of the first clan to consolidate rule over most of the islands." The Yamato period of japanese culture was from 300 to 800 AD. Using that information, my analogy in my last post was apt. Suggesting "Yamato" embodies all of what is "Japan" is the same as suggesting Native Americans embody all that is North America. The former is an important part of the latter, yes, but they are not the same, and if they are considered the same, then it ignores all the other parts of the whole, making it a very inaccurate comparison. If Capcom wanted the character to represent Japanese culture, then they would have called him Japanman in the first place, or Nihonman as the case may be.
Consider my information inacurate if you want, but it looks a lot more acccurate than that one sentance dictionary definition to me. And in a way Yamato IS a traditional name for Japan, but that doesn't explain that "traditional" means historical, and not neccessarily consistent. It's more like Constantinople is the traditional name of Istanbul, or USSR is the traditional name for Russia.
Edit#too many to count alreay: I apologise to anyone that read this post before I took out all the enraged ranting. |

Taimu! Taimu! -.-
Calm down, boys n' girls, after all, it's nothing to get all upset at one another for.
From what I remember, prior to Wily stealing them, the RMs from Rockman 6 were built to represent their countries in some awesome G Gundam style battle tournament.
Knightman - England/UK
Centaurman - Greece
Windman - China
Flameman - Arabia(May be different, but I think it was Arabia)
Blizzardman - ?(I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure he was from Switzerland)
Plantman - Brazil
Tomahawkman - USA
Yamatoman - Japan
Going by Rai's definition would put Yamatoman as a kind of Japanese Patriot, so in a sense, Japanman could be a semi-accurate translation.
But again, they're both official spellings, so it shouldn't be looked down upon to use Japanman as the character's name if that's what you know him as. _________________

It wasn't Capcom who designed Yamatoman nor Tomahawkman to begin with, you have to keep in mind they were designed after an stereotype by children. Tomahawkman does not represent USA because native Americans were hardly influent after the colonization of the nation. He represented to a japanese child the stereotype of USA being a Western to this day. Many asiatic games still relate USA with westerns. Yamato turned merely into an expression supposed to represent Japanese pride. Calling him Japanman was probably meant to be a way to say he's 'proud to represent' that country in terms easier to understand for the kids that never got to see the first Yamatoman.
USA is too multicultural to have a single representer and certainly poor Tomahawkman wouldn't be the best to represent the whole 'american pride' with how multicultural US is. _________________ Hecha en MÉXICO - Avatar by Me.

My point was that Yamato doesn't represent Japan any more than Native Americans represent the US. I had never heard of Yamato having the second meaning of the pride of the whole nation (which I still won't believe fully unless I see some kind of source on that) as far as the information I had told me, Yamato was no more than one of several periods in Japanese history, a part of a the whole. The heart in the body, the sun in the solar system, the roots in a tree, whatever. It still wasn't an equality relationship, and I still don't consider Japanman to be a completely appropriate name change because of that.
Oh, and I don't mean to bug you for a source. I usually don't mind a bit of hearsay, but Yamato is another matter. Obviously, you can't believe what you hear about it just anywhere, like that GameFAQs "It's a spear" source proves. And I admit my Age of Empires sourcebook may be no more accurate, and like I said I'm not putting my trust in that online dictionary definition Zan posted, but clearly I can't just put my trust in something I heard Plantman say either. It seems everyone has their own idea of what the word really means, so the more official the proof, the better. |

I remember reading the Yamato thing representing pride to Japan in one of my books when I took Japanese. But I cannot offer physical proof since I have no scanner. I also remember that being mentioned in the Japanese translation of the CDs of Rockman & Forte. You can choose to believe it or not, doesn't mean Capcom didn't have a good reason/idea of why they did change his name to Japanman. I presume to someone that has never played MM6 nor has any interest in Japan, the translation Japanman would suffice. _________________ Hecha en MÉXICO - Avatar by Me.

Don't make me look like a bad guy. I NEVER sided with Zan. Because there are no sides. I was informed to give you a warning for the USAman comment. She found it unnecessicary.
