Burnerman stared at the board in front of him intently. He had to make sure his move would be a good one. Finally picking up a piece, he moved the rook upwards. Smirking, he looked back up at Shademan. “There. Let’s see you try and get to my king now.”

Chuckling, Shademan merely took a bishop and moved it. “You still have a lot to learn about this game, Burnerman. Check.”

Growling, the flame navi checked the board again. Sure enough, the bishop put his king into danger. Sighing, he moved one of his pawns forward, blocking the bishop. “Well, you play this damn game every chance you get, so it’s no wonder why you’re so good.”

“Jealous?” Shademan drawled as his eyes scanned over the board, “I’m just a natural at this game, that’s why.” he said as he moved his queen over, poised to capture Burnerman’s remaining rook.

Darting his eyes over the field, the flame navi tried to look for any openings he could exploit. He knew what Shademan was trying to do by moving his queen. Narrowing his eyes a little, he prepared to make a risky move. “Oh? I never thought you were the type to brag.” he remarked as he took a pawn and moved it.

Shademan raised an eyebrow as he stared quizzically at the piece that was moved. Shrugging, he took the opposing rook with his queen. “Well, all of us has to have something we brag about, don’t we?”

“Heh.” Burnerman snorted, taking another pawn and moving it, “I guess you’re right. After all, I am a better cook than you.”

Shademan growled as he moved his queen again, taking a pawn this time. “Sure, rub it in my face all you want.” he grumbled, smirking at how Burnerman was now losing most of his pieces.

Shrugging, Burnerman moved a knight, putting it within range of Shademan’s queen. “Whatever. Just remember I wasn’t the one that made all the Darkloids run off in fear at the meeting that one night.”

Shademan blushed. The vampire navi had been forced to make dinner for all the Darkloids one night because the programs had to be deactivated for maintenance. When one Darkloid took a bite of the supposed food, he contracted a major virus in his systems. All the Darkloids in the room immediately fled, humiliating Shademan. Growling, he then moved his queen to take the knight. “I would advise that you keep quiet about that.”

Grinning, Burnerman moved his last pawn forward. “Didn’t think you were so sensitive about that incident…” he murmured as he looked at the board. “And by the way…Check.”

Startled, Shademan checked the board. How did he let Burnerman get such an advantage over him? Closing his eyes in thought, he tried to think up the best move possible. Grunting, he moved his king away from the pawns. “Your move.”

“Good!” Burnerman said cheerfully as he moved another pawn forward. “Check again, o master of chess.”

Growling, Shademan studied the board again. His queen was stuck where it was due to the numerous pawns swarming the king, and any move made by the king would result in a chase across the board. Thinking up of any possible solutions, Shademan came up with one.

He tipped his king over.

Burnerman blinked as Shademan held his stare to the ground. “You win.” Shademan growled, humiliated that he was beaten by Burnerman.

The flame navi slowly smiled. “I actually won? Whoo!” he cheered as he jumped up, cheering.

“Yeah, enjoy your gloating over me.” Shademan muttered, looking at the board again. Where had he missed Burnerman’s sudden comeback?

"Why are you being such a sore loser?" Burnerman asked as he stopped whooping in joy. "It's just a game."

"A game to you," Shademan suddenly snarled, making the flame navi step back in shock, "but this is how I get all my strategies. By losing at just one game at chess, I lose at the battlefield as well."

Burnerman blinked again before he sat down again, sighing. "I don't know why you view battle like one big game of chess, because it isn't."

"And how would you know?" the vampire navi retorted. Burnerman shrugged.

"Mainly because everything is a huge risk on the battlefield. You can't really expect all your heavy-duty planning and strategy to fully succeed, do you?" Burnerman asked as he stared at the vampire navi. "Not even the best laid plans always go the way they are supposed to. You should know that."

Shademan opened his mouth to respond, but suddenly closed it again. He sighed as he realized Burnerman was right. "Sorry...I guess I overreacted."

Burnerman chuckled. "It happens." Smiling, he gestured towards the board. "The only reason I won was because I just made a last ditch assault and distracted you from thinking. I suck as a strategist."

Shademan's eyes widened as he realized why Burnerman had been so insistant on embarassing him with old stories. Chuckling, he started to move all the pieces back to their original positions. "So, that was your way of winning? Distracting me from the game so I wouldn't notice what you were doing?"

Burnerman grinned while he rubbed the back of his head. "Yep!"

Smiling, Shademan finished setting up the chess board again. "Best two out of three? This time, I won't go easy on you."

"You're on, Shademan!"

And so, the two continued playing.

---

Re-done because the first one sucked royally. Changed to a friendship fic and done better. Hopefully.

Nice job.

Anyway...as an amateur chess player, I felt the chess game was quite well done, and I appreciate how you used the game as an allegory to real life, or at least the life the Darkloids at hand are experiencing. Shademan resigning through tipping the kind is a nice, old-fashioned touch. Not many games end that way anymore.

Good read.

What a read! As a strong chess player (with a FIDE rating) I can point out a few slightly dodgy bits - I find it hard to believe that the king would have been swarmed by many enemy pawns and have not been removed previously.

Also, I think Shademan was far too greedy to be plausible... However, I guess that Shademan didn't really take care, was a little too overconfident...

But overall, nice job.

More Shademan x Burnerman fluff please /o/ *briiiiicked* I can see it in Shademan's personality to be perfectionist and a sore loser, and I liked how Burnerman complementes or 'brings' Shademan's competitivity down, giving him another perspective of how things work. I enjoyed this, BUT I STILL DEMAND MORE FLUFF!
