the only legendary wolf i know of is fenrir himself
donĀ“t know if greiga is based on him

Fenrir (or Fenris) is a gigantic and terrible monster in the shape of a wolf. He is the eldest child of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. The gods learned of a prophecy which stated that the wolf and his family would one day be responsible for the destruction of the world. They caught the wolf and locked him in a cage. Only the god of war, Tyr, dared to feed and take care of the wolf.

When he was still a pup they had nothing to fear, but when the gods saw one day how he had grown, they decided to render him harmless. However, none of the gods had enough courage to face the gigantic wolf. Instead, they tried to trick him. They said the wolf was weak and could never break free when he was chained. Fenrir accepted the challenge and let the gods chain him. Unfortunately, he was so immensely strong that he managed to break the strongest fetters as if they were cobwebs.

After that, the gods saw only one alternative left: a magic chain. They ordered the dwarves to make something so strong that it could hold the wolf. The result was a soft, thin ribbon: Gleipnir. It was incredibly strong, despite what its size and appearance might suggest. The ribbon was fashioned of six strange elements: the footstep of a cat; the roots of a mountain; a woman's beard; the breath of fishes; the sinews of a bear; and a bird's spittle.

The gods tried to trick the wolf again, only this time Fenrir was less eager to show his strength. He saw how thin the chain was, and said that was no pride in breaking such a weak chain. Eventually, though, he agreed, thinking that otherwise his strength and courage would be doubted. Suspecting treachery however, he in turn asked the gods for a token of good will: one of them had to put a hand between his jaws. The gods were not overly eager to do this, knowing what they could expect. Finally, only Tyr agreed, and the gods chained the wolf with Gleipnir. No matter how hard Fenrir struggled, he could not break free from this thin ribbon. In revenge, he bit off Tyr's hand.

Being very pleased with themselves, the gods carried Fenrir off and chained him to a rock (called Gioll) a mile down into the earth. They put a sword between his jaws to prevent him from biting. On the day of Ragnarok, Fenrir will break his chains and join the giants in their battle against the gods. He will seek out Odin and devour him. Vidar, Odin's son, will avenge his father by killing the wolf.

Sounds interesting.

So only Greiga has a story or does Falzor have one too?

EDIT: Found something close to one from a site called Ages Of Myth

Falzor is a cheerful Spirit, who takes great pride in his work upon the lands of Zobalia, and in those who live upon it. Falzor is the master of creation, crafting the world of Zobalia, and the universe from his forge. He is often depicted as a broad shouldered dwarf, or in the more abstract as a large bear watching protectively over Zobalia. His colors are those of his forge, from the grays of steel to the darkest blacks.

Doesn't seem to be a relation to the Falzor we know.

It's unlikely that's the story as well, because you supposedly encounter the Cyber Beasts in a graveyard type area. If it's the same area then logically there must be some connection between the two backstories if they are based on a legend.

None of the Bosses have been based on legends before so I don't really see why they'd start now. I'm not saying they can't, I just feel it is unlikely.

Greiga, and Falzor are loosely based off of a Japanese, or chinese myth, in which a wolf and Pheonix, or falcon or what ever Falzor is supposed to be are ENEMIES. Though their names are one thing it doesn't mean it is the same in the myth, because they are BASED on it, as in they are not the ones from it but ones based off of it. When the game comes out I am sure someone, will spend the time to graciously translate the Legend of the Cyber Beasts for all of us who can either read and understand NO JAPANESE AT ALL, or those of us who can read kana and understand SOME JAPANESE.

So lets just focus on the goal of this topics, the meaning of the names of the Cyber Beasts.

Greiga and Falzer are base on none myth or legend, but is a Capcom made story. But, lets put it this way, there is always a competition between earth and sky. Greiga is a wolf/lion creature, in other words a ruler of the earth, while Falzer is a falcon/phoenix, ruler of the skies. They aren't viruses, but they can produce Beast Virus, or something like it. The origin of the name, Greiga sounds like grey in the Grei, and the ga could be something of the earth element, in Falzer, Fall and zer, that have a kind of chinese sound, but to me, this two doesn't have nothing to do with a legend or a myth. But, as I know i think kram_elbog is right, he hads a point in the names could be an abstract form of something that doesn't have to do nothing with it.

Well, maybe is a little fun, kram_elbog, but really sometimes is frustrating(sorry for bad spelling) I would really like to know if it its real that the names had a meaning, you see, it gaves an ironical touch to the series

I was really tempt to say the name are for words in German, but not anymore.

As for the mythic part, I think the idea to put some mythical representation is over used or/and in the case of RM.EXE it's not appropriate since it's more based on technology than legends (ex.: Saint Seiya and Digimon).
