Many people complain about how terrible the translators are for changing names badly, well, here's your chance to compair and contrast, I guess Razz

Kakigenkin カキゲンキン -火気厳禁 - literally "Caution: Flammable"a warning of flammability- Anti-Fire

In english, I am writing the names in a western style.

光熱斗 Netto Hikari - Lan- The pronounciation of Netto is clearly a pun on the word "internet" or "network" while the kanji has a seperate meaning. Lan is trying to convey that same pun LAN stands for local area network

光祐一郎 Yuichirou Hikari - Yuichirou translates to cheerful helper

光遥か Haruka Hikari -

光ただし Tadashi Hikari - Tadashi literally translates to "Right" so if you translate his name literally you get "Right Light" ... you know who XD

光彩斗 Saito Hikari - Hub - The pronounciation of "Saito" is a pun on the word "Site" while the kanji has a seperate meaning, some people in Japan call websites "Net-sites" instead, which is what you get if you put both names together. Every LAN has a HUB Smile

櫻井メイル - Meiru- Mayl - a pun on the word "Mail" the english version makes it more obvious with a literal romanization.

小山デカオ - Dekao Oyama-Dex

綾後事やいと - Yaito Ayanokouji-Yai-Shortened Yai

伊集院炎山 - Enzan Ijuin- Eugene Chaud- Enzan literally transaltes to "Burning Mountain" Chaud means hot, Eugene sounds like Ijuin

伊集院しゅうせき- Shuuseki Ijuin -unnamed

大園まり子- Mariko Oozono-Ms.Mari - the "Mari" in Mariko is a pun on her hair style

氷川せいじ- Seiji Hikawa- Dr. Froid - Froid means cold, Hikawa means icy river

サロマ- Saroma - Sal - Shortened Saroma"Ro" is replaced with an L

黒井みゆき- Miyuki Kuroi- Miyu - Shortened Miyuki

緑川ケロ - Kero Midorikawa - Ribitta- a pun on the noise frogs make, like Kero

ミリオネア- Millionaire - Ms.Millions

名人-Meijin - Mr. Famous

荒駒トラキチ-Torakichi Aragoma - Tora

火野ケンニチ「ヒノケン」-Kenichi Hino"Hinoken" -Mr.Match

色綾まどい - Madoi Iroaya - Ms.Madd

マハ・ジャラマ - Maha Jarama - Yahoot

ジャック・エレキテル「エレキ伯爵」 - Jack Electel "CT.Elec" - CT.Zap

日暮闇太郎- Yamitarou Higure - Mr.Higsby - Higsby is a fun pun on the word Higure

アネッタ - Anetta - rules - j00 Razz

ゴスペル首領 - Gospel Boss

帯広シュン - Shun Obihiro - Sean- They rhyme

逸見ダイスケ - Daisuke Hayami - Speedy Dave- Speedy is a literal translation of his last name, Dave is an easy way to replace "Daisuke"

ダーク・ミヤビ - Dark Miyabi - Mr.Dark-

五十嵐ラン - Ran Igarashi - Lilly- Lilly is one of the many ways of translating "ran"

てるおじょうもん - Teruo Joumon - Terry - Teruo easily changes to Terry

アツキ炎 - Atsuki Homura

イワンコーリスキ - Ivan Coolisky - Ivan Chillsky - Coolisky is hard enough to translate as it is >.>

Partially Raijin's thread about chips back on the old forum kicked up a notch, mostly a thread started out of sheer boredom.

Igarashi = 50 storms , the kanji for "Ran" means tempest
Shiraizumi means white fountain(nothin to do with Metal I assume)
Atsuki is a pun on Atsui which means hot
Dekao = pun on Dekai which means large(fatty :D)
Chisao = pun on Chisai meaning little
Yaito = From Dash character of the same name

Another thing on Daisuke, I always thought they got the idea to name him Dave from Digimon, in one season, a character named Daisuke became Davis.

They should be. Sure they are different languages, but Japanese borrowed heavily from Chinese in its formation, so some of the kanji is very similar to that of Chinese characters, and you should get a fair idea of what they mean.

By the way, I can't read neither Chinese nor Japanese...so I'll have to take your word for it. I'm learning Chinese, though.

A few months ago I tried looking into the translations myself, and a bit of a search led me to a Kanji library site that listed Mayoi as "lost" or "confused", and as you can see from Josuke's and Heatman's input, it has a few other interpretations as well. It's also easy to see how it was derived from the Chinese "mystery".

Hey, since there's no CLEAR point to this topic, I have a question involving Japanese spelling to add to this.

Netto's name is written in kanji, Dekao and Meiru's in katakana, and Yaito's in hiragana. Am I correct on the following assumptions?

Netto's in kanji alone because he's the major character, Dekao and Meiru katakana as they're 'regular' characters, and Yaito in hiragana because she's of a higher social status?

Yes, for the record, I am aware that katakana is typically used to denote the Japanese spellings of words taken from other languages, or names of things, whereas hiragana is the spelling for actual Japanese words. I just seem to think that might not apply for this one instance.

Netto is in Kanji 1 to seperate it from "Net" which is used constantly in EXE
Netbattle, network, ect 2 because he's a main character Smile

Dekao and Meiru are in Katakana because they're not Japanese words
Yaito is in Hiragana to seperate her from the Dash couter part, I guess.

And Poochy, the kanji for Ayanokouji is also wrong.... I couldn't type it! Help a brother out here Razz

The use of kanji, katakana or hiragana is all just preference. It doesn't denote any kind of status or reason. Dekao and Meiru could write their names in 'gana if they wanted to, or even kanji if they could find kanjis they liked that would spell their names.
