This is my first go at a Rockman Fanfic. I use my own original characters, in the world of Rockman, hence OC. First I'd like to note I'm Dutch, so if I write some sentences that don't seem to work, feel free to point them out so I can correct them. I am planning to write 10 chapters for this story, and I am now halfway the first chapter, but since I hope it's an interesting read, I will allready post it. If you want to read other things from me, look for my name on fanfiction.net, there should be a Harry Potter OC there, too. Okay, have fun and please give comments!

Chapter 1: Solo

- Eastfern City, Holland College -

‘Get ‘im, Vito!’
‘Yeah! I know you can beat him! You rock!’
‘Tells us something else that’s new!’

A grin appeared on the face of the young netbattler. He looked at the holographic screen that was displaying his netbattle, and nodded towards his Navi.

‘You hanging in there, Solo?’

The green netnavi held his shield in front of him, and quickly looked around the arena. His opponent might have been just another navi, like he had fought hundreds before, but this sure was a stealthy one. The speedy type. And you always had to be on your toes around those kind of navi’s.

‘Everything is fine, Vito. Just don’t throw off my concentration.’
Vito held up a battlechip. ‘Care for some extra power, then?’
‘That depends on what chip you’re holding up there..’
Without a reply, Vito inserted the chip into his Progress PET. On the screen, Solo was smirking.
‘That’ll do...’

Dennis was nervous. Even though he was a fine operator, and he and his Navi Stealthman had proven to be quite the fine team, Vito and Solo were widely known for their effeciency during netbattles. He had to be carefull....

‘Stealthman.. be carefull. Wait for my signal.’
‘Fine, Dennis.. he hasn’t spotted me yet. You just say the word.’
Dennis whispered. ‘Wait till he inserts the battle chip...’
‘Ready...’
‘NOW!’

‘That’ll do...’
‘GO!’
‘SLASHER, ACTIVATE!’
<SWISH>
‘WHAT THE.....’

Dennis nearly dropped his PET out of surprise. ‘Stealthman! Plug-out!’
The battle computer replied. ‘Stealthman Plugged Out. Winner is Solo.’
Everybody cheered as Solo stood gloriously in the battle arena. Vito smiled and walked up to his opponent. He held out his hand.
‘That was a great fight. I am looking forward to a rematch someday!’
Dennis looked relieved. ‘Yeah, me too!’

As Vito was walking home that day, he thought of back when he had gotten Solo. Ten years ago, during his seventh birthday. Nearly all of his friends had their own Navi’s by then, and he didn’t even have a computer in his room. His parents had always been kind of reluctant against technology, and had tried to raise their son to live without it. But it had been to no avail. Vito had always been obsessed with technology, and wanted his own PET more then anything else. That morning, his mother came walking into his room with a square-formed giftbox.
‘Happy birhtday, Vito.’
‘Hello mom..’, Vito had replied. ‘You’re up early.’
She smiled. ‘Vito, you know what dad always says about technology?’
‘Yes’, Vito had replied with a sad face. ‘People don’t get out and about anymore with technology. People who posess it only want more, and they get addicted to it. It is the reason that humanity is going downhill.’
‘Yes’, his mother sighed. ‘And perhaps, in some views... in many views... he might be right. But...’
Vito looked at his mother. She gave him the present.
‘Sometimes... You have to look at things from another perspective.’
‘Mom?’
‘Happy birthday, Vito.’

‘Vito?’ Solo aked. ‘Vito?’
Vito stopped daydreaming, and looked at his lime-green PET.
‘What is it, Solo?’
‘Stop daydreaming. I know you love to, but it takes your mind of off daily life.’
‘Daily life is boring’, Vito shrugged. ‘I may be a good netbattler, and you might be a kickass Navi, but other then that... life is pretty boring.’
‘Why do you keep saying things like that?’
‘I donno.... I guess that I prefer doing things on the internet instead of in real life.’
Solo smirked. ‘You’re still looking for a girl in your life, am I right?’
‘A girl?!’, Vito shouted. ‘Why the heck would that be the reason for me daydreaming?!’
‘I donno, but those recent subscriptions to dating forums...’
‘Just research, Solo! It’s a school assignment! I am doing a report on the influence of internet communities on our culture.’
‘Sure. And I crushed the WWW.
‘Shut up.’

Slowly, they walked into the narrow alleys which Vito always used as a shortcut to his house. Even though they were dark, Vito wasn’t afraid. He had gotten used to these streets over the years, and thought they were exciting. As they went further, Solo started talking again.
‘You know, if you focussed some more on daily life, you would find a girl. Netbattles aren’t exactly helping in that area.’
‘SHUT UP!’ Vito shouted through the alley.
‘Hit a nerve there’, Solo snickered.

Suddenly, from out of nowhere, someone jumped in front of Vito. A girl, about his age, dressed in gothic clothes and with a pin pierced through her lower lip. She blocked Vito's way, and didn't say anything. Vito however, was hardly surprised. It hadn't been the first time he had bumped into a strange person in these alleys.

'Vito Allen, I presume?'
Vito looked angry. 'I don't like to talk against people who block my way.'
'Well, you better make time for this one talk, then...', the girl grinned with a face full of malicious content. Vito noticed that the small snake-shapped tatoo above her left eye seemed to dance as she narrowed her eyebrows.
'Give me one good reason...'
She licked her lips with her tongue. 'Let's just say that the fact that I deem you important, makes enough of a good reason for you.'
'Sorry, no.'
The girl grinned. 'Very well then.' She plugged in her PET in a fuse box next to her and her eyes seemed to light up like little, burning coals.
'What good is that going to do?', Vito asked.
'You know, fuseboxes are easily shortcircuited, making them go... Well, you know...'
'You would willingly let that fusebox explode, risking your own life, to destroy me?'
'Don't flatter yourself. I have no intent of doing such a ridiculous act. And it is not YOU I want to destroy. All I want, is one thing...'
'If it's money...'
'It isn't.'
'Then what...'
'I want to netbattle you...'

The moment Solo was plugged into the fusebox, a thousand thoughts were crossing his mind.
'Who is that girl? What does she want from Vito? And where do I fit in?'
His data found a way into the main part of the fusebox, and he took a look around for his opponent. Nothing to be seen. So the navi he was going to fight was most likely a coward. Yet, Solo remained focussed.
'I must protect Vito. I promised Anthony I would do so...'
Slowly, the memories of the past came back.

'Solo? Solo? Can you hear me?'
'Who... this light...'
'Ah, so the experiment was a succes...'
'Who are you? And... what am I?'
Though his vision was distorted, Solo could see the image of a man who was around 30 years old. He smiled and looked back at him.
'You are Solo.EXE. You are a netnavi. A being designed to navigate through cyberspace and make life a little easier for its owner.'
'I am not.... human?'
'Human?'
'Like you... I am not..'
'No, no, good heavens, no. I am surprised you know the concept. No, you are not like us. And yet, very similair.'
'Then why do I see these... images...'
'Images? What images?'
'As if... I had a memory.. a life before this...'
Anthony had looked surprised. Slowly, he had bent over towards Solo and looked him straight into the eyes. 'You are an extraordinary one, aren't you? Perhaps that's because of...No, impossible.'
Solo didn't reply. He had a feeling this was all really weird, and that trying to fight this all would only result in more confusion.
'Anyway, Solo... I made you to serve and protect a little boy. A little boy, who has been alone for very, very long.'
'Your son?'
'No.. but something like that....'
'I will do as told....'
