In Stream the chip data is supposedly stored on the PET. Although in various times during the series, chips are used for soul unisions and other battle chips. |

Uh, I think you're asking why characters use the holographic touch screen sometimes while also slotting in the old fashioned way. Apparently they use the traditional slot in for when it's an emergency and the ship they need isn't on screen. I suppose some chips like Soul and Synchro chips can't be stored like that anyway.
The whole drag and drop thing is actually not very convenient at all, it's pretty much just novelty, and to help sell that feature in the upcomingDS game, which is why Lan and Megaman show such forced excitement when they're exposed to the brand new PET for the first time. |

I think the new PETs act more like the PETs in the games, and I'm referring to a chip folder. I think the Net-Ops can basically store 30 or so chips on the PET for quick use, or insert their own (since slotting in, theoretically, would take longer). Like it was mentioned, Soul and Synchro chips probably can't be stored on the PET. The downfall of this, though, is it seems like the on-screen chips are randomized, giving the now very crucial NetBattling concept (as in protecting the world through NetBattling) a heavy handicap. (I would have kept my PET Advance.)
I always found it amusing, though... the anime gives battle chips a new design, but at the same time, eliminates the need to slot them in most of the time... _________________
