I think everyone knows the old Megaman cartoon had quite a few inconsistencies from the games, because it apparently didn't follow them. :P Plus, I think this is in the wrong section.

Umm, shouldn't this go in the Rockman Square topic? But in response to the topic, no I don't remember the old show too well, and yes, it was bad. _________________

...Proto Man did work for Wily in the games.
And in the toon, he was made by both Light and Wily, and revamped by Wily for fighting, from the looks of it.

Yes but in all do respect I doubt he was actually evil as the Mega Shows made him.
These Episodes scared me when I was 5. Now there okay, but I loath the Roll on the mega shows. And that's coming from me _________________

Wait a sec, Protoman didn't work for Wily, im sure of it.
(Spoilers if you haven't beat Megaman 3 or 5)
He was a prototype model of Megaman he created before he ever created Rock, then Im guessing upon completion, Protoman fled from Light's lab and disappeared, until he appear in Megaman 3 where he though Mega's power was no match for Wily this time and decided to challenge him to see if he was strong enough to take down Wily. Eventually Mega proved that to Protoman thus having the final battle at the end, [spoil:0d373ebce6]when Megaman defeated Wily but Wily's castle was crumbling and Protoman saved Megaman and though Wily died.[/spoil:0d373ebce6]
Later in Megaman 5, [spoil:0d373ebce6]Wily would create The Darkness robot which was able to copy Protoman's appearance so it would like [/spoil:0d373ebce6]Protoman was a enemy as Protoman kidnapped Dr. Light forcing Megaman to jump into action to save him. Well that's how I played and learned from the games _________________ -Follow me on Twitch.tv-

No, nor was Rush as dumb, Roll as proactive, Light as dim and deus ex machina-ish, or Wily's plots and Robot Masters as genericly cartoon as you can get.
But what can I say? They had to dumb the show down considerably to appeal to stupid focus groups. Had they gone on with the original, it'd have been great.
Too far ahead of its time, I figure.

According to the Japanese sourcebooks, including translations of the info at MMN and Rockman Robot Centre, he did.

Yes. But I think he was just playing a double agent role. Wily was to dim to catch on _________________

Well, if you want to ignore what the Japanese origins and information tell and go with what fans have been speculating upon for whatever time, then sure, that works too.

Well, if by "like that," you mean like in the cartoon, not exactly. He did work for Wily for a spell, partly out of a debt of gratitude to Wily for fixing him(as I understand it), and if I remember correctly, he was a bit in the dark about what was really going on, and a bit confused, which is part of why he'd later help Mega Man out.
Mega Man 4, I guess he finally figured out where he stood, and that's when he made his move.
Remember, the cartoon was dumbed down a bit from what it was originally meant to be. Proto Man was meant to be more of a free-spirit, sort of coming and going as he pleased, and would even help Mega Man, even though he worked for Wily as a rule.
Let's hear it for those focus groups once again, folks. Remember, they're also the ones who saw to it we had Mega Man with muscles, rather than the style like in the games.

I dunno that's what I felt at least with the series, Protoman just didn't feel like a bad guy, he help Megaman more then trying to destroy him, you know
But if that's what the Japanese origins say then i'll believe, it just makes me have to jump back on Megaman 4 and play it to find out _________________ -Follow me on Twitch.tv-

Try playing the two games before 5, and behold the horrors of Proto Man's troubled youth. ;P

Scott McNeil played the part of Proto Man perfectly.
It's just unfortunate that the part of Proto Man wound up having to be written rather out-of-character.
Still, he had some great lines.
As for Wily... Scott's the greatest. Pity he's on NT Warrior and didn't get to use it there...
And the show, for what it is, is good. It'd have a hard time standing against fare like Beast Wars, Justice League, or TMNT these days, but for its time, it was good...
...save for some episodes.
