In the large city, the sun was setting over the horizon. The light filtered throughout the narrow spaces of the city, bathing the buildings in a soft orange light. Many humans and reploids were walking the streets, grateful for the peace that had fallen onto the city once again. Meanwhile, ontop of one of the tall buildings stood a blue android, clutching the edge of the rooftop and staring out at the horizon as a gentle wind blew through his brown hair. Sighing, he closed his eyes. It had been a while since he had been up here.
Opening his eyes again, X looked down at the city streets sadly, his eyes narrowing. "How much longer can this last?" he asked himself as he leaned over the edge, looking at the great expanse below, "How much longer does everything have to go on?" he muttered tiredly. Pushing himself off the rail, he stood again and looked at the sunset. "Everything can't last forever, and this isn't an exception. How long is it until these meaningless wars stop? Will everything be destroyed by then?" he asked himself.
He suddenly heard some footsteps from behind him. Turning around to see who it was, he was surprised to see a reploid with dark blue armor approach him. "Hey." he greeted as he smiled at the blue hunter. X narrowed his eyes again.
"Why are you here, Axl?" X asked, turning back to look at the setting sun. Axl chuckled and stood right next to him.
"Zero told me that you always come up here when you're troubled by something;" Axl said as he looked at the commander, "When I couldn't find you in the headquarters, I decided to come up here...and here you are."
X sighed. "Zero knows me too well..." he muttered as he looked at the younger reploid. "Everything has been happening too fast, so I needed to come out here and think about what has happened so far."
"About the wars?" Axl questioned quietly, a look of concern on his face. X slowly nodded.
"That, and...well, just some other thoughts that I find myself troubled over," he muttered, looking down at the city again. "I often wonder how long this false peace can last."
Axl blinked, looking confused. "False peace? Why do you call it that?" he asked. X shook his head.
"Well...look at all of this;" X said as he gestured to the whole city, "It's our duties as hunters to protect this city, and others like it, from Irregulars, yet with all the warfare that has gone on over the years, I just have to wonder..." he muttered, this time looking at Axl, "How much do we have to make the people suffer just to attain that peace? How can I keep fighting, knowing that no matter what I do, people are still going to be hurt over what happens?"
"X..." Axl muttered softly, frowning at the commander. "Why are you thinking like that? Everything you do has an impact!" he exclaimed, moving closer to him.
X grunted. "Does it? If that is so, then is it for better or for worse?" he asked as he looked at the darkening sky. He then laughed bitterly. "I wonder if this is supposed to be my destiny...fighting for eternity, always asking questions that I'll never know the answers to..."
"Stop it!" Axl roared suddenly as he turned the blue hunter around to face him, "Just stop it! How can you believe that?!" he asked, enraged that X would even be thinking that way.
X only glanced at him before turning away and sighing once again. "Axl...I don't want to think that way. I don't believe it, to tell you the truth, however..." he muttered, walking over to the edge of the roof again, "I always wonder what will happen once the wars finally end. I have to keep fighting because I want them to end." Sighing, he sat down and leaned against the edge, his back propped up by the stone. "The question is...what will become of me?"
Axl calmed down and stared at the blue hunter. "Worried about your future? That's unlike you..." he muttered as he sat down next to him. X chuckled.
"Perhaps...all I've done since we've met was worry on wars and the humans, haven't I?" he asked. Axl nodded while smirking.
"Yeah, but that just shows that you're putting everyone else above your own life. While I don't think it's good of you to do that, I think it shows why so many people look up to you." he said, blushing a little bit. That was one of the reasons he looked up to X; the blue hunter wasn't afraid of giving up his own life to protect people.
"You're right..." X muttered, standing up again, "But...it hurts. It hard knowing that even though you still protect people, efforts seem to be in vain everytime when there is a new uprising...when will it end?"
Axl stood up as well, looking X straight in the eyes. "I don't know when it will end, but we just have to keep fighting. We have the hope that we can put an end to this someday, right?"
X gave a small smile to Axl. "Right. As long as I can still fight, I know that the wars will end someday, and I wish to make that sooner;" he said, turning back to the sunset. "It's just that it's really hard to keep my mind off of everything."
"I know, but shouldn't you be talking to someone about this rather than withdrawing and brooding to yourself?" Axl asked skeptically. "I know it's good to think about this stuff...but don't you think that just by stewing in your own juices, that you're actually being counterproductive?"
X closed his eyes and sighed. "Don't get me wrong, I know that talking to people helps, but...It's hard talking to people in the first place, other than Zero;" he admitted, "I can't really carry on a conversation unless it's official business or something like that."
Axl just laughed at that. "You? Unable to carry on a conversation? How? I mean, you can easily talk to people in the headquarters, so I don't see..."
X grimaced. "Like I said, that's part of official business. It's just that I find it hard to talk to people who can't really grasp what I've been going through, you know?"
The young reploid could only nod. "Yeah, I can see what you're saying;" he said as he stood beside the blue hunter. "Not many people would want to talk to someone that constantly worries on war." he teased.
"Very funny," X replied dryly, although Axl could hear the humor in his tone. "But seriously, I don't think many people would like talking to me anyway. There isn't really anything interesting about me, anyway."
"Bah, everybody is interesting in their own way," Axl snorted before chuckling. "However, you're talking to me without any hesitance, so I guess that means something, right?"
X blinked for a few moments before laughing. "You're right. I am talking to you..." he muttered. Axl smiled. "I don't know why, but I feel at ease talking to you. Maybe it's because you know for yourself what I'm talking about, right?"
"I guess you can say that," Axl shrugged before looking down at the city. "The view is great up here!" he said while grinning.
X gave him a small smile. "Isn't it? This is why I come up here...just looking at this city and all of its people calms me and helps me remind myself that I'm fighting to protect it and its inhabitants. Not only for here, but everywhere."
"I can see why..." Axl breathed, "You're unlike anyone I've ever met before, X...I don't see why you have to burden yourself with you questions." he said softly.
X chuckled. "Well, someone has to, and I know Zero doesn't think of them." he joked. Axl laughed.
"Too true!" he cackled before stopping. "But seriously, I don't think it's good to be thinking about this all the time. You could at least talk to Zero about this stuff."
"I have before," X answered back after a slight pause, "He understood, and recommended that I find a place where I could think to myself. He said it would be better than any advice that he could give," he chuckled. "Although from time to time, he does come up here to talk to me whenever I need to think."
"That's good to hear," Axl sighed. "Just remember that we can still talk, so don't try to keep everything to yourself, alright?"
"I'll try, but there are no guarantees, you hear?" X replied as he looked at the sun, which had lowered even more during his conversation with Axl. "Heh, that's another thing I like about being up here...the sunset is so wonderous."
Axl gave a small laugh. "Yeah, it is..." he muttered.
The two stayed like that for some time, only staring off into the distance. X then sighed. "We should get going soon. It's going to get dark soon..."
Axl nodded, but before he could even move, he was enveloped in a hug. Staring at the blue hunter in shock, he felt his head lean down against his ear.
"Thank you...for coming out here." X said softly before ruffling his hair in an affectionate manner before moving away and walking towards the door. Axl could only gape at the commander as he exited.
"X..." he muttered softly before smiling and looking back at the sunset. "Maybe I'm a bit closer to understanding you after all."
He would have to come up here more often if he really wanted to know his idol, but he was willing to make the effort. The best things in life were the ones that took hard work and effort to achieve, after all.
