|
I took a look through this section of the forum and noticed there were no threads dedicated to One Piece. Either this means nobody bothered to make one, or the one that previously existed is no more. That said I don't think I'd be in the wrong for making a new one.
So, who here has seen One Piece, and what do you think of it? Who's your favorite member of the Straw Hat crew? Your favorite villain? Favorite story arc?
I'm sure people out there have been exposed to the series in various forms: raws, fansubs, scantlations, and the official translations of the manga and anime by VIZ and 4-Kids, which means not EVERYONE has seen the series up to the same point, so let's all be mindful of any spoilers. (That means anything that happens beyond the Arlong Park storyline.)
PS: This is for simply discussing One Piece as a series, not bashing the dub or VIZ's translation of the manga. I don't like the way 4-Kids is handling the dub of One Piece myself, but what's done is done and no amount of pointless bitching in a forum thread is going to change that. So don't do it. _________________

yay, a One Piece topic
I'll get to the questions first...
Favorite crew member: Chopper.
(slight spoilers for the most recent manga arc ahead)
[spoil:2194c1c4cb]Or, if he joins the crew at the end of the current raw manga arc, then Franky would be my favorite, since he's my favorite character overall.[/spoil:2194c1c4cb]
Favorite villian: Eneru
Favorite storyline: The current one in the raw manga, Water 7.
Anyhow, One Piece is one of my favorite anime/manga series ever... has some really great storylines IMO and I love the odd character designs. |

.One Piece is a very good show. Solid characters, solid storyline. Favorite good guy... I'm gonna have to go with Roronoa Zolo. He has a really cool design and just kicks ars. Plus he kind of reminds me of Roy Mustang for some odd reason -_-;. Favorite villain is easily Mihawk. I tend to like swordsman and he's the best. His dub voice is so cool :D . _________________

I haven't watched or read any of One Piece really. I've read a few pages from my friend's Shounen Jump, but I refuse to watch any anime dubbed by 4Kids. ^^; From what I have seen it looks very comical. o-o; _________________

One Piece is quite comical, but it can also be quite serious and epic at times too. The beauty of One Piece is that it's a series that everyone can enjoy going from silly to dramatic to emotional and back again without a hitch. The humor, the action, and the drama never seems like it's forced.
To this day, I think One Piece is the only anime/manga series that has made me cry. _________________

I watch the dub on saturdays, but I also watched the japanese version from Kaizoku-Fansubs. Luffy, Sanji and Ussop crack me up, and I really like Chopper and Zolo (Yes, I'm calling him Zolo, you don't like it? There's the door) because I feel can relate to their personalities in some certain points. Also, Nami wins the award for coolest backstory :o
Surprisingly, I'm not totally against the dub. Despite the edits, cuts, and episodes fusing etc. the english version isn't really that bad to me. I was reading some Shonen Jump chapters and discovered that a lot of the script's dub, especially in the earlier episodes, is almost EXACTLY the same as the original japanese script. That's a rarity as far as 4Kids shows go. Plus, One Piece tends to show a lotta stuff that 4Kids usually NEVER shows on ANYTHING. That, and despite what the subbies say, I really like some of the english voices for some of the characters, especially the villains, and Zolo.
So, yeah. One Piece has quickly become one of my favorite series. I love the opening themes, and I actually made, and can sing, an english version of "Hikari E" :D |

I'm currently reading the manga in SJ, I used to read it on an MSN groups thing for about 90 or so chapters. Than it got kind of boring for me so I decided to read it monthly (Well at least I will once SJ catches up to where I stopped)
I watched the dub for about one and a half epiodes, But I pretty much hated it, no matter how hard I tried to like it. I've never seen the subs since I don't want to download so much and use all that electricity. _________________ "I, frankly, felt like the reception we recieved on the way in from the airport was very warm and hospitable, and I want to thank the Canadian people who came out to wave - with all five fingers - for - for their hospitality."

I've seen a good bit on dub One Piece, read some manga, probably the only things that dissapoint me about the dub are, the voices of Sanji and Nami, and the theme song. Ever notice english theme songs always sing the name of the show, but Japanese themes are usually just songs?
I also noticed no topic dedicated to Zelda games... |

Yeah I've noticed that to (the thing about themes, not about zelda topics). The only exception I can think of for a Japanese theme song using the name of the series or whatever is the Opening to EXE, I think it's called "Kaze wo Tsukinukete" _________________ "I, frankly, felt like the reception we recieved on the way in from the airport was very warm and hospitable, and I want to thank the Canadian people who came out to wave - with all five fingers - for - for their hospitality."

The original opening theme for One Piece, "We Are," actually mentions the name of the series once in it, so it's kind of an exception.
And I must contest that the Dub script is almost EXACTLY like the Japanese script. While it started out quite similar, as the series has continued there have been more cuts and edits made to the dub, and more episodes have been spliced together, changing a LOT of the background info for the characters and even the course of certain events. Also, they kind of hit you over the head with the "morals" contained within One Piece. I can tell you for a fact Luffy didn't say anything about "needing each other" to Nami when she finally asked him for help against Arlong. _________________

[spoil:aae28700eb]Or, if he joins the crew at the end of the current raw manga arc, then Franky would be my favorite, since he's my favorite character overall.[/spoil:aae28700eb] |
[spoil:aae28700eb]He's been given a whole pile of character delevopement so far so unless Oda wants to deliberately lose fans, all signs point to yes he's obviously the next strawhat. Besides, the crew already has a rubber-bodied captain, a seemingly invincible swordsman, and anthropomorphic reindeer as crewmates to name a few. A cyborg wouldn't be too out of place if it meant Luffy finally getting that muscian of his that he wants so badly. Now Pauley, that's another story entirely. I, personally, want both as Strawhats as well as a lot of One Piece fans[/spoil:aae28700eb]
Now that that's taken care of:
Favorite Strawhat: Tie between Robin and Sanji. I guess you could divide that up as favorite female and male Strawhats respectfully.
Robin: Most people say Nami is the more attractive one but I'm afraid I'll disagree. You don't wanna know what I think of Nami. I don't hate her but I don't exactly like her either. Now Robin is another story and I dig the ability to grow extra arms out of anywhere.
Sanji: Say what you want about his lousy dub voice but the guy fights with his legs and kicks a lot of ass in the process. And the dub names for his attacks are so bad it's funny: (just in case) [spoil:aae28700eb]BARBEQUE RIB BUSTER = best. attack. name. EVER![/spoil:aae28700eb]
Favorite Villain: So far, Don Krieg. I love the ridiculous amount of weapons that guy carries on him. And that fight with Luffy was intense. Although I'm probably willing lean more towards Arlong since 4Kids COMPLETELY screwed over his fight with Luffy. And I'm told that's one of the best fights in the history of the show.
Favorite Arc: Uh, I'll get back to you when I A) Can't get bittorrent to stop hating me and start watching the show uncut or B) 4Kids stops splicing the episodes together. Not trying to diss the dub here but that's pretty much the biggest problem with it. When they started out the only mesh jobs involved were basically "filler" scenes letting people know what's going on [spoil:aae28700eb]such as the flashback involving Nami's past while living under Bellemere's care and her capture by Arlong[/spoil:aae28700eb] but ever since the fights near the end of the Arlong Arc, they've been doing it like it's going out of style. Just ask anyone at Toonzone what they did to that whale Laboon and you'll see what I mean. |

Doing what I normally do I watch it on 4kids then read about what they cut on a uncensored website. It's a fun show pretty entertaining. |

Oh I certanly know that by NOW. But I mean, in the earlier episodes, like just about everything up until the VERY beginning of the Arlong arc, the script was extremely similiar. I know that the convo between Luffy and Nami when she was crying had a lot of added dialogue in the english version, and after that, when they began to fuse episodes like CRAZY, that obviously made less and less chances for that to work out. However, even in the fused episodes (by then I had been watching the fansubs) many of the scenes had the dialogue somewhat similiar, but yes, I know you're talking about. |

I should probably throw my own two cents about the questions I posed in my first post.
Favorite Straw Hat, well that's pretty difficult to decide. Everyone who's joined the crew has been so perfectly integrated that it's hard to really picture the series without them almost the instant they join, not to mention their personalities play perfectly off once another. Zoro's just totally badass, Sanji is cool and suave, but is also a kid at heart. Luffy's just hilarious and Nami, while she can be a total ***** at times, she's also perhaps the most level headed of the crew, and you know that without her, they would have gotten into a lot more trouble. But I'd have to say my absolute favorite Straw Hat pirate is Usopp. Yes, the big liar of the group. He may not be strong, and he's certainly not good looking, but he's got as much heart, if not more, than any of the other crew members, and always pulls through when it counts the most.
[spoil:c6cfca73e4]Plus, he's funny, and even more so once Chopper joins the crew. XD[/spoil:c6cfca73e4]
Favorite story arc so far (as well as fight) is the Arlong Park storyline. A lot of people say this is the cut off point for One Piece; if you're not a fan by the time it's done, you never will be. I think they're right, as Arlong Park is a cumulation of pretty much everything we've seen in the series up to that point, and kicks them up a few notches. A village of people being terrorized by pirates like in the arc with Buggy? Arlong's got an entire island of villages cowering in fear of him. A (future) member of Luffy's crew who has a difficult past filled with hardships and tragedy? Nami's is by far the most tragic of the group. An ever looming threat that the villain is going to get what he wants and nobody can stop him? Arlong didn't get that bounty of 20 million Beli for being weak or easy, that's for sure. There's even government corruption, deception, betrayal, Luffy being Luffy, and of course, it all comes down to a tremendous climax in which Luffy goes one on one with Arlong in an incredibly over the top and violent showdown, and by far, Arlong's defeat is one of the most satisfying, as he proved himself to be so rutheless and cruel that you knew he absolutely deserved what was coming to him. Not to mention this is the first time we realize that although he may be a goofy idiot, you never, NEVER piss Luffy off, or you're going to pay the price.
[spoil:c6cfca73e4]Honorable mention for my favorite fight goes to Luffy vs. Bellamy the Hyena, though I don't know if you can really call that a fight. XD[/spoil:c6cfca73e4]
And favorite villain would have to be Buggy the Clown. Just because it's Buggy, and he's awesome. _________________

Heh, I was going to make a OP topic, but I'm lazy. =P Anywho, I love how the art style is unique from what is out there and the uniqueness of all of the characters.
Favorite Character: Probably Usopp. Can't think of my favorite character for some reason.
Favorite Villian: A tie between Hatchi and Mr. 2.
I could go on and on for a while talking about this series, but that's why I'm a regular at Arlong Park (1700 posts there from February to now ^^; ).[/spoil] |

Okay people, while I know I said no dub bashing here, I think this needs to be addressed.
The Little Garden arc is aparrently being cut from the dub.

I haven't watched much of it (and I refuse to download fansubs), but if only 4Kids had a better theme song and changed a few voices, they wouldn't have a bad dub at all. About edits: I could honestly care less if it was totally cut up and torture raped. I'd watch it based on my preferences. |

You know they could cut a lot of the filler arcs. They may think it goes faster that way. |
