Some advice I can give you is to not save your sprite work in JPG or JPEG format, it can cause havoc with colors as you might be able to see with that red background you colored in being distorted. It is better to save your sprite work in GIF or PNG formats to perserve their color information.
Another thing that I would suggest is to add more shading to the sprite, I noticed that you are using a lot of light and dark colors, but there is a considerable lack of shading to the lighter area's. You can look at other sprites and you will see that there are some shading done to them, and use that as a reference as to where the shadows and shading might fall on your characters sprite. _________________
