Roasted Sweet Potato

Netto smiled widely as he climbed down the stairs from his room to the dinning table. It was curry night and he was more than willing to clean the pot on his own. He smiled when he heard the front door open and ran to receive his father and their current guest, Dr. Regal. He had grown used and more comfortable around the scientist, so he wasn't wary of him anymore.

"Hello, papa!" He cheered as he walked to the entrance to greet his father.

"Hello, Netto" said Dr. Yuuichirou Hikari, helping himself inside the room. Dr. Regal just nodded and entered silently. "How was your day?"

"It was good." He nodded and dragged his father to the table, commenting on the night's dish.

Dr. Regal smiled a bit and left his suitcase in the couch. The scientist took off his gloves and placed them on top of the suitcase, before following the family to the dining table. He remembered Yuuichirou said he had some news to share with everyone that night, and he admitted he was really curious about what he was going to say.

Haruka brought the dishes to the table; cheesecake and ravioli appeared to be the dinner for tonight. "Here it is, everyone!" She smiled cheerfully and sat down at the table along with everyone else.

Dr. Regal picked his fork and began to eat silently as he heard the family talk about their days. He smiled politely when Netto informed about his misadventures at class. That boy kept falling asleep during the first class. He had to admit he enjoyed the background noise of the family as they ate, and he preferred not to talk, feeling he had nothing to say or because he wasn't addressed.

"Well" spoke Yuuichirou, clearing his throat. "I have an announcement to make, everyone." At once, Haruka, Netto, and Regal fixed their attention at him.

Netto looked up and faced his father. "What is it, Papa?"

"I've got word from Commander Barrel. Dr. Regal is going into probation, in an apartment provided by the government, by next week." He gave a warm smile to his colleague. "Sorry for keeping this from you, but I wanted it to be a surprise."

Dr. Regal blinked a few times, truly dumbfounded, "Excuse me?" Netto tilted his head in confusion at first, but then quickly understood Dr. Regal was going to have his own place soon. He grinned, feeling happy for the scientist.

"They think, and I certainly agree with them, that you are now fit to live in peace by yourself.(2) With some restrictions, that's correct, but I'm sure it's nothing you can't handle." Yuuichirou patted Regal. "Congratulations."

One could have expected the man to say something, perhaps smile or say thank you, but he was still quite surprised to even think about being happy about this great big step he had been given. That was, of course, until he heard Haruka squeal and talk about how exciting it would be for him.

"That sounds terrific, Dr. Regal! You must be happy about all of this." She grinned, and Regal smiled awkwardly; the woman sometimes scared the heck out of him. "So! What do you plan to do with this new home of yours?"

Regal couldn't do anything but tilt his head back, as if he was trying to put as much ground between him and the woman as possible. "Well... I admit I'm not sure yet, it's very unexpected for me. I suppose the place I'll be given is already arranged and has furniture, so I don't know what I'll do on it just yet" He couldn't help but rub the back of his neck.

"Don't worry about the furniture;" said Yuuichirou, suddenly remembering he had dinner to finish, "we have spare furniture we'll be glad to give you. Do you remember if you have any personal belongings you'd like to get mailed to your new apartment?"

Regal looked down to his plate of food, playing with it slightly, as if thinking, before looking up to Yuuichirou, "I'm afraid I do not. All I have is my clothing and the suitcase SciLabs proportionated to me." He didn't want to admit it, but he felt embarrassed for his lack of possessions. The scientist looked at his own clothing for a moment, it was made of some fine material, for it had lasted months without wearing out, but it was finally reaching a point where the fabric was beginning to give in.

"We can fix that!" said a cheerful Haruka, surprising both scientists (Netto had wisely chosen to pay attention to his half-eaten dinner). "I wouldn't mind accompanying you to the mall, we could buy stuff you may need-- oh! That's right, we can't forget about food and other provisions-- " Haruka kept rambling, while Yuuichirou sweatdropped and Regal was staring at the excited woman, dumbfounded. "--there's this excellent set of pots I saw at the mall a week ago, I suppose they still have it... you do know how to cook, right?"

Dr. Regal blinked a few times, trying to process what the woman had been saying, before finally shifting uneasily and clearing his throat, "I don't know how to cook."

Netto braced himself for what was about to come, he heard his mother scream in utter disbelief and then a slam on the table.

"THAT'S IT!" she said, tightening her hands in fists. A familiar look crossed her eyes, the same kind of look her husband had when a new exciting project was to begin, "Dr. Regal, I'll teach you to cook!"

Netto couldn't help but fall from his chair.

Yuuichirou realized this was the time he had to chime in. "Honey, give the poor man a rest."

Regal couldn't help but to look at Netto, then Yuuichirou and finally back to Haruka, "W-well, I... y-you see... uhm... I-I don't..." This was certainly a first, he couldn't remember I time he stuttered this much in less than a minute.

"Ah, it'll be all right, darling" said Haruka, dismissing Yuuichirou's concerns. "We need to give him all the help he needs and I'll make sure he gets it." She smiled kindly, though, to a stranger's eye, her smile was nearly evil.

Nearly.

Regal didn't know if to cower in fear, or willingly go on through the purgatory that was presented before him. He looked to Netto, silently asking for the boy's input, but the boy just returned an apologetic glance to him. He sighed heavily, allowing his shoulders to drop lightly.

The following two weeks were going to be quite a trial, indeed.

It's really, really awesome to see Dr. Regal actually given a chance at redemption and a normal existence, instead of [spoil:0ff2405b44]getting owned by Duo.[/spoil:0ff2405b44] I love the way you portrayed the Hikari family, Haruka especially - seeing as how she gets no love whatsoever in the show - and Regal's reaction is priceless. I have to go finish EXE5 now, after reading this. /o/
