Those who Fight - PG 13 One Shot for Sketch *Spoilers?*

Yep, Sketch commented to me this fanfic idea prior to writing it, I wasn't able to attend to it but I had liked the idea, and he wanted to see it writen. So, it's a gift for him.

Those who Fight. (yes, shamelessly FF7 song in there XP)

"Are you sure about this, Sir?" Colonel asked quietly as Barrel walked into the small restaurant where he'd meet with someone.

"His skills would be a great asset for our team. It's worth the try." Barrel replied as he looked around, wondering if any of the costumers could be the person he was looking for.

"I'm slightly concerned, Sir." Colonel insisted. "How can we be sure they won't sell us out if Nebula manages to out-price us?"

"We can't. I know it's a risk, but right now we can't have the luxury of neglecting any possible allies we could acquire."

"With money." The navi interrupted, more than uneasy about the whole issue. Trust a mercenary to join the team and aid them? Their loyalty wasn't something that could be secured, and Colonel felt in this case, loyalty was a key for the team to succeed.

"Colonel, I understand your worries. Let me handle this, I know what I'm doing." Barrel stated in a serious voice.

"Understood, Sir."

"Your navi has his priorities quite set." A man of black hair, dressed in purple and gray robes sat across the table. His face sported the scar of previous battles.

"I take it you're Dark Miyabi?" The Ameropean commander raised an eyebrow, he didn't think He and Colonel were too loud as they spoke.

The black haired man nodded and pulled out a purple Progress PET, the holographic screen displayed a purple clad navi. Colonel was familiar with hist appearance. "So, what business do you wish to discuss with me?"

Barrel projected Colonel's own screen, as a waitress came to ask what they'd have. Barrel ordered the first thing that he saw in the menu. When the waitress left, he addressed the man before him.

"As you may know, the Nebula Syndicate has taken control of the net over the last few days. I've created a team of Net Navis to help to liberate the network. So far, Princess Pride and her navi, Knightman, and Hikari Netto and his navi, Rockman, are the members of the team. Of course, my navi, Colonel is part of the Team as well." Barrel explained, stopping for a moment as their orders were brought to them. Once the waitress dismissed herself, he continued. "I want to hire you to join our team. I understand your services have a high cost, but I asure you, you'll be rewarded accordingly."

Shadowman narrowed his eyes lightly but remained silent, gazing at his Operator for a moment.

"I see." Miyabi replied dryly, taking some of his food and eating it silently for several minutes. After a long silence, Miyabi looked down to his navi, "What do you think, Shadowman?"

The ninja glanced at Colonel and Barrel for a moment before looking back to his operator, "Are they fit as a team to face Nebula?"

Miyabi chuckled and looked back at the Ameropean, "My price is reasonable. I'll join your team with no charge, but only if I'm allowed to test your current team members. I want to make sure they'll be able to hold their ground during the battles that await ahead."

Barrel was dumbfounded, as he certainly didn't expect this reply from the mercenary. "I am sure they'll be able to hold their ground. But if you insist, you can test them as better fits you."

Miyabi smiled and nodded, extending his hand for a handshake and close the deal.

"Can I ask something, though?" The team's leader frowned, "Why are you accepting to join the team just like that? I thought you were a mercenary."

"We may be mercenaries, but we do have our own sense of honor." Shadowman replied, "Master Miyabi knows there's no future left for us is Nebula accomplishes its plot."

The commander raised an eyebrow, "What about Gospel?"

"That was a job, and as far as it concerned to us, their objectives wouldn't obstruct our own." Dark Miyabi replied calmly, "Nebula, however, has a far more destructive plan ahead."

"How would you know that?"

"I have my ways." The scarred man stated, "But one doesn't need to be a genious to know the severity of the issue in our hands, Dr. Hikari's kidnapping was just the beginning. And you know it."

Barrel nodded and stood up, closing his deal with Miyabi. "When are you going to conduct your tests?" He asked as he called the waitress to pay the bill.

"That's for me to know, and you to find out." Miyabi replied calmly and continued with his food.

The leader of the team raised and eyebrow and chuckled softly before turning around to leave. "What do you think, Colonel?"

"I am not sure myself yet. But if their motives are what they claim, they'll help the team greatly." Colonel nodded. He'd reserve his thoughts for when the mercenaries would come to 'test' him and the rest of his team.

As Barrel left the restaurant, the ninja leaned back in his seat, glancing outside through the window next to his seat.

"This will be Interesting." Shadowman said softly. "You think we'll be able to stop Nebula, Sir?"

"We might, if everyone's motives are strong enough to give it all and willing to sacrifice their everything."

"Are you, Sir?" Shadowman asked.

"I am. But, are you?" Miyabi looked back to his navi.

"Of course, Sir." Shadowman nodded, a smile hidden behind his mask. This would be, indeed, an interesting turn of events.

Ooh. This is NICE.

This is an excellent set-up to the Shadowman scenario in ToC, and you protrayed both Shadowman and Miyabi perfectly. The same goes for Barrel and Colonel, who in turn is not finding it honorable to hire mercenaries. The flow of the story is just right.

Nice. Very nice.

I agree with Sol--the characters seemed a lot more accurate in this portrayal of the scenario. I did not know that Miyabi was there to "test" the team, but I suppose it could have been inferred since Charlie seems to do that in the ToB storyline. Moral conflict between hiring a mercenary was also dealt with adequately, and added depth to the storyline.

Sketch, you really shouldn't beat yourself too hard for that. You are credited for the original idea, and it was a good read.
