Promise - One-shot

"Netto-kun, we're almost there!" Rockman cried as they continued to escape from the crumbling mass that was Proto. The two brothers had just defeated the so-called Ultimate Navi, Forte, and Proto, the amoeba that had absorbed both Forte and Wily. Both Netto and Rockman then met an afterimage of their grandfather, Hikari Tadashi, and were now escaping with the data he entrusted to them.

"I know! I can see it!" Netto echoed within him. Full Synchro was a strange feeling for both of them. Rockman actually felt Netto within him, and he could hear the thoughts of his younger brother.

"Just a little bit more...!" Rockman said as he ran towards the plug-out portal, trying to keep his balance as everything shook around him. Suddenly, the blue navi was brought to a halt unexpectedly. Grunting, he tried moving his legs, but he could see some parts of the red amoeba holding his feet in place.

"Rockman! What's wrong?!" Netto yelled within his mind. Rockman tried to move his feet again, but to no avail.

"I can't move!" he cried out, still struggling. That was when Proto decided to engulf the two within itself. "Wah...!" Rockman let out before he was silenced.

"What's happening...?!" Netto gasped out. Suddenly, it felt like something really hard collided with his head as he collapsed into unconsciousness.

After what felt like hours to Netto, he finally regained consciousness. Looking around, he couldn't see anything at all within the blob. "We're inside Proto...?" he whispered to himself, shaking his head to gather his bearings. "Rockman, what's going on?" Netto asked. When Rockman didn't answer, Netto's eyes widened. "Rockman! Speak to me!"

There was no answer from the blue navi as Netto tried again. "Rockman! Please, say anything! We have to get out of here!"

Again, there was no answer. Netto, growing desperate, screamed. "SAITO-NIISAN!"

"I'm here, Netto-kun." came a voice. Netto then found himself in a white landscape, nothing around him. Looking in front of him, he saw his brother just standing there, naked as the day as he was born.

Running over to him, Netto grasped his shoulders. "Saito-niisan, what's going on?" he questioned, looking at his brother's eyes. "Why can't we escape?"

Saito smiled slightly as he took Netto's hands off his shoulders, taking one of them within his own. "Netto-kun," he began, looking at him very seriously, "We're inside Proto. Within a few hours, we'll be totally absorbed by it."

Netto looked at his brother, his eyes widening. "We're going to be absorbed by Proto?" he whispered. Saito nodded gravely. Netto shook his head, already growing fearful. "Isn't there any way we can escape?"

Saito closed his eyes and nodded. "There is one way. I will build up all of my reamaining power and overload my program. That way, I'll open a hole in Proto for a short amount of time...enough time for you to escape." he said softly.

Netto's face paled even more. "But...but if you do that...!" he whispered, looking at his brother as if he was crazy.

Saito nodded. "It's the only way..." he let out. Looking around, he frowned. "We don't have much time...I have to do this now, or you won't be able to escape."

Netto shook his head vehemently. "No! I'm not going to leave without you!" he exclaimed, on the verge of crying. He recalled the nightmare he had earlier that morning, where Rockman was saying goodbye to him. Was it all just a premonition?

Saito lowered his head, not saying anything for a few seconds. "You have to Netto." he stated as he looked at his brother seriously, "Please, this is my last request as your brother...escape and live..."

"Saito-niisan..." Netto said, looking at his twin brother in shock. Saito only looked up and smiled at him.

"Don't be sad, Netto-kun;" he said as he clenched at Netto's hand, "The time I have spent with you as Rockman has been the happiest in my life! Just seeing you go day-to-day witha grin on your face made me happy. That's why I, as both your brother and your navi, want you to live!" he cried out, a few tears coursing down his cheeks. Netto only looked on in shock.

"Saito-niisan..." he let out again. Saito only shook his head.

"Promise me you'll live for me, alright?" he whispered as he began gathering his energy. Netto looked surprised when he started to float up and off the ground, only being anchored by Saito holding onto his hands.

"But..." Netto began, but he caught sight of Saito's determined face and closed his eyes. "I promise." he said as Saito smiled again. "However, Saito..."

"Yes, Netto-kun?" Saito whispered as his energy reached its limit.

"Please...promise me that you'll be with me in spirit. I don't want to be alone..." Saito was silent for a few seconds before he nodded.

"Yes, I promise." he said as his program began overloading. Saito then let go of Netto's arms, who looked surprised as he began floating away from Saito.

"Saito-niisan!" Netto cried, trying to reach down to his brother, "Please...don't go...!" he mumbled before he couldn't see his brother anymore. Feeling weakened, he closed his eyes and fell into unconsciousness.

Saito only looked upwards as he saw Netto fade from his sight. Then looking down at his hands, he saw that they were beginning to erode away. "Netto-kun..." he began as he closed his eyes and sighed. "I won't be able to fulfill my end of the promise..." he whispered. "Forgive me..." he let out as he finally fell unconscious, taken by the absorbing amoeba known as Proto.

Elsewhere, a certain brunette woke up outside the exploding base, surrounded by the three concerned friends.

Hmm. Yet another incredible job. I've always found that scene at the end of EXE3 to be one of the most beautiful and heart-rending scenes ever written in the game's canon, and this just brings that scene closer to vibrant life. All throughout, I felt as if the fic was charged with emotion, and it seemed at some points it went beyond that.

This vignette left me speechless, and a lot closer to crying myself. That's what good fiction should do--reach to the reader and affect him almost directly. Marvelous job.
