Saiyuki

Anybody else here watch this show. I find this show very well done and fun. This show got action, comedy and other stuff to. My favorite character would be Gojo and that god character that Son Goku killed in the last episode. I think his name was Hoshi or something.

Basically, it's about a group of people VERY loosely based on the Saiyuki legend, who try too hard to be cool and go around solving random problems for random people and beat up random monsters.

Not too fond of the show myself, but most of my dislike is for stuff that I'm pretty sure would be exclusive to the anime, so I'm gonna check out the manga some time.

The original chinese legend is called Xi You Ji or Journey to the west in which a buddhist priest known as a Sanzo is called on by Budda to retrieve Sutras from India and bring them to China to spread Buddhism. On the journey the Sanzo is accompanied by the Monkey King (Goku as we call him) who was born of a rock fertilized by the grace of heaven and earth. As well as a water sprite or kappa (Gojyo) and a gerenal who was tranformed into a pig.

The Anime, Saiyuki follows that legend more closely. The anime Dragonball just uses slight references to the legend and various characters who have traits of the people in Xi You Ji.

Now for my opinion Saiyuki is MUCH better than Dragonball and NO ONE can sway me on that.

My fave is Gojyo(pink haired dude) thats his name right?

That legend is interesting...
Its kinda cool to see how close the anime is to that legend.

The basic storyline of Saiyuki is the following:

In the idyllic land of Shangri-La, humans and youkai lived together in harmony. Recently, however, a miasma has spread into the heart of Shangri-La and the youkai started going insane and began attacking humans. To solve the problem, the Sanbutsushin (the Three Aspects of Bhudda) call upon Genjyo Sanzo, a high ranking priest (Sanzo is the title), to put an end to the madness. They tell him that far away in India, someone is trying to revive the fearsome youkai lord, Gyumaoh, by combining magic and science. Sanzo is ordered to travel to India, find out what exactly is going on, and put a stop to it. If he is successful, the miasma should vanish and the youkai will regain their sense of self.

Sanzo is also assigned three companions: Son Goku, a heretical being (basically a creature that shouldn't exist) who is already Sanzo's constant companion; Sha Gojyo, the result of the forbidden union of human and youkai; and Cho Hakkai, a gentle, intelligent young man with a dark past.

Me, I love this series. The storyline is deep, as are the characters, and there's so much going on that I've never once gotten bored.

My favorite character is Hakuryu, Hakkai's pet shape-shifting dragon. The Sanzo group uses Hakuryu to get around by having him transform into a jeep. *lol*

I love Saiyuki, my friend let me borrow the manga and then since i loved it so much i started collecting the series so far the dvd count is....two ^^;

Luffluff Saiyuki~ <3 X3 The characters are retarded in a very amusing way XD Ive read all of Saiyuki and Saiyuki Gaiden (there are only 8 chappies in that right?), and like one chapter of Reload, and mebbe sometime soon, Ill download the Anime somewhere =P

Ive always liked the Monkey King tale-thingie....I think I saw the soap opera versions of it like 5 time XD; But the sad thing is, it took me more than half the whole Saiyuki to figure out that it was a manga version of it

And now.... *rushes off to: 1- draw some DECENT Saiyuki fanart (too many random Gojyo doodles....... <.<) and 2- make my friend a Saiyuki fan (I made her a FMA fan and I think I made her a Death Note fan XP)

Ah, by the way, that pig guy was a water sprite? o.o Wasnt it....*tries to remember* eh.....he committed some crime in heaven and he was made mortal for like 500 years, then he did something else and he was turned into a pig then someone made him half human/pig? O_o

hmmm ive seen all of the saiyuki episodes and i have all the dvds,all i have to do is collect saiyuki:reload and saiyuki:gunlock.there are a total of 100 episodes and 1 movie.
saiyuki is all about a group of people;a priest which is sanzo,goku(demon)hakkai(demon)gojyo(demon),they are all set off to a journey on the west to stop the revive of gyumaoh a super demon.
on the way of the journey they stop on side quest and run into people suck as kougaiji and his sister lirin and his other two friends dokugakuji(gojyos brother)and yaone,these guys are after sanzos sacred scripture because those are the keys to revive gyumaoh.the sanzo party runs into these guys in alot of episodes, kougaiji's group is just like sanzos group just kinda evil(but they really arent)
threw episodes 26-50 the sanzo group mets one of their major threat and they are the gods,which are homura and his two companions shien and zenon(they are also gods).homura is trying to destroy heaven and create one of his own,one thats better and one that has no rules.but as usual the sanzo party gets in a pretty tough batttle with these guys and sanzos group eventually wins.(after goku beats the crap out of homura and kills him,yay goku)and the sanzo group once again sets off to the west.and thats when one the first and second series ends.
the rest of the 50 episodes saiyuki: reload 1-25 and saiyuki:gunlock 1-25 have yet come to america,except for reload i have 2 dvds of it.

I like Saiyuki. My sister goes slightly gaga at the mere sight of Hakkai :] .

Anyway, there are lots of variations to the original story of Saiyuki. There is one where the story starts with Goku's desire for godly power. There is also another one where they were 12 going west. The only thing that gets me is the similarities between these variations. For instance, their weapons (Goku always has the Nyoibo, and Gojyo always has the Crescent Spear).

The funny thing about the anime and the original story would be Hakkai. Originally, Hakkai is a pig man with a giant rake/hoe as his weapon. In the anime, Hakkai is a good-looking man who can use his ki to his will (projectiles, shield, etc.)

Im thinkin that Gojyo is the equivilant to the piggy....Both obsessed with women with the not so nice personality and arguing with teh munkie.... And Goku = teh monkey....... *still has no idea why Sanzo and Gojyo call Goku a munkie........* And Sanzo = the priest person-guy. Cept their personalities are waaay different... Sanzo doesnt seem like he cares about anythin, hes rude (sorta....threatening people and alll), etc etc.... XP And I think Hakkai would be the ox person-guy thats in some of the versions Ive seen.... The polite one o.o

I think the characters were called odd thingies just to make some references to the Monkey King thingie...... like calling Goku saru (monkey), calling Gojyo kappa (as far as I know, Gojyo doesnt have anythin to do with a water thingie.... o.o), and Sanzos been called baldy a few times o_o;

Sha Gojyo is the equivalent of the kappa, not the pig man. Gojyo's weapon (Crescent Spear), is what the original Gojyo holds. As described by some of what I've read, the Crescent Spear's blade resembles and shines like the moon.

Cho Hakkai may be a pig man, but he is a gentleman (and too much of it). In some cases, Hakkai is a farmer, thus his giant rake/hoe is his weapon. The only time this image of Hakkai was destroyed is in Dragon Ball (the perverted panty-transforming pig).

Sanzo and Gojyo calls Son Goku a monkey (saru) because that the original Son Goku is a monkey. The Goku of Saiyuki has two things that the original Goku has: the circlet (a power control device) and the Nyoibo (Heaven Staff).

Genjo Sanzo is the monk assigned to go west and stop the ressurection of Gyumao. In some of the original stories, he didn't just spread Buddhism in China. Some say he stopped Asura's plan to destroy the heavens (in my opinion, the original Asura is Saiyuki's Homura). Also, in some of the original stories, Sanzo's gender is never disclosed (for all we know, Sanzo could have been a girl).

In my opinion, Gyumao (the demon king) is the ox guy...

Gensomaden Saiiyuki.. i watched it juz last month.. i watched Gensomaden Saiyuki Reloaded.. i think that SANZO is more powerul and more cool.. Razz

I don't follow the anime, but I follow the manga and love it.

As for the storyline, I like it so far and, yes, find some part like the Chinese legend in the story that has been mention so far.

So far, I read the whole serie Saiyuki and I'm starting to read Saiyuki Reload.

I love Saiyuki. I have Vol.1 of the manga, and the first 3 seasons one DVD. Don't forget the Son Goku plushie. I've also seen some Saiyuki Reloaded and some Saiyuki Gaiden.
