Warning, this has heavy subtext, even for something so short. So I tell you now that this isn't some pretty happy fic.
Here you go
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forte gazed out of the computer screen, no pity to be found in his cold red eyes. He looked upon the human section of the world that was connected to the hell hole known as ‘the Undernet’.
Time and time again, young navis came to the Undernet to ‘prove’ themselves worthy of power and fame. However, he knew of no human outside of the slums that were willing to go there to prove anything. It was a hole, a dead end, a hell for all those who entered. It promised nothing and gave even less. In it there was no future.
Here was where Forte had come to know the human race. The pathetic, filthy, pieces of scum that they were. Obviously there was no better place to prove his point. Nightly women were beaten until they could no longer stand and children stole for food to survive, rather then the petty thrills some kids used it as.
Day and night Forte looked into the eyes of men who didn’t have any heart or soul left. He knew this because they didn’t feel anything. Unlike himself who still hung onto his pain and rage these people had long ago given up on life. They existed. Forever doomed to haunt the earth as living dead.
In and out they wandered into shacks they called homes. Pathetic pieces of spackle and dirt that were falling apart at the seams. Children cried out in hunger at night and their mothers were not able to console their cries so they were hit and beaten instead.
How? Why?
Forte asked himself these questions all the time, and yet he could never come up with the answer.
How could humans do that to one another? How could a mother see her child as nothing more then a welfare check to spend on drink? How could a man see his ‘significant other’ as a mere excuse to escape the pain of the day by inflicting his own pain? How could those who lived so much better let this happen under their noses and pretend it didn’t exist?
Forte knew that he had no power to help those who were suffering. A tiny, tiny part of him hated himself for it. He had so much power, and yet this part of the world he had no influence over. He could yell and rave all he wanted and all he would get in return would be hollow stares, perhaps a chuckle or two.
Why did this happen? Did these people deserve to be born in this kind of pain? Was it predestined that they would live in a hell where their only exit was six feet under?
On a whole Forte avoided the links that took him to the surface computers of that section of the city, but sometimes it was inevitable. Here was a place where a glare from the right person could make even himself shiver in some kind of apprehension.
Down the street he saw a dressed in no more then rags look around. He… she… it was impossible to tell because the child’s face was streaked with so much dirt and grime that any features that may have given away a gender were obscured. Its hair was cut short and whoever it was wandered the streets, gray eyes dim as they looked in the distance.
Quickly he jumped into another computer and got ready to go back into the net but not before he saw the child pick the pocket of a passerby. He saw the man’s whose wallet the child had stolen flick down and he knew that the child would be beaten or worse if it could not escape.
Such a life was all too common in his world.
As he passed through the links he grimaced at the thoughts of what may or may not happen to the child he had so readily left behind. Why? How?
The answer was simple to him. It was engraved into his very being.
All humans were like that on a whole, and they all deserved to die. _________________ Roses are #FF0000, violets are #0000FF. All my base are belong to you.
...wow. This has left me fairly wordless...
And you delve into a topic that is usually not dealt with by mere writers of fiction--especially not those in this fandom. Nevertheless, you seem to capture the plight of the "slums" quite effectively, and describe the utter emotion of people caught in this web.
I must ask you one thing--what inspired you to write something so...dark? It doesn't seem that this can stem from what you are experiencing...right?
Anyway...great work. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! But they'll have to avoid the Whammy, as they play the most exciting game of their lives! From Television City in Hollywood! It's time to 'Press Your Luck!'--Rod Roddy
...and now for something slightly different.
Wow. I really like this view on how Forte perceives the world, even if it is not one you see in the anime/game. Nicely done, as usual, on how you have him conclude that he, himself, hated humans, as we all know.
I liked this a lot personally~ :] _________________
I just finished reading 'Night' by Elie Wiesel, which is a first hand account of what it was like to be in a concentration camp.
I sobbed like a baby at the end ;-; _________________ Roses are #FF0000, violets are #0000FF. All my base are belong to you.
I can understand why you wrote a fic like this after reading that book. I cried as well. Your fic was very deep, and it really made me think about society as a whole. It's sad to think that after all the human race has gone through, it seems as though we have learned nothing. The same situations rise up again and again, only in different forms each time. I'm still thinking hard about that. I think you just may have inspired me to write a fic of my own based on these thoughts... _________________
Wonderful, Neko, absolutely wonderful. Not only did you choose such a surprisingly dark subject, but you chose a surprisingly dark narrator. It's not often you see a villain adress a negative subject who doesn't then laugh maniacally about it. Instead, you had Forte be as repulsed by this quality of living as any hero would be. A very commendable piece of work. _________________ Stuck In The Middle With You; a Metroid and Halo crossover
