I've recently downloaded the program MUGEN, hoping to be able to play with fighting game characters from everywhere. I could even have the legendary Mortal Kombat VS Street Fighter dream to come true.

The question is, whenever I add a new character, some of them will appear as blank spaces and will not be choose-able. In other words, they're like spaces to skip right over through.

How do I make those characters useable? And if anyone's got the Mouser edition of Hanzo from any World Heroes or Neo Geo Battle Coliseum game, please email it to me since I'm desperately looking for a Hanzo file. Thanks in advances.

There are a few possible problems.

First, you might've entered the name of the character's .def file wrong. Double check that before you do anything else.

Second, the character might be missing some files. Check the site where you got the download to see if there were any seperate .sff or .snd files you needed to download.

And finally, if nothing else works, you just have to assume the character file is either bad or not made for your version of the game. Check the file's information to see which version it was made for; usually characters and game versions made for Windows/DOS and Linux are incompatible. Either way, the character is just unusable, period. You're better off just finding another version of the character.

However, if you DO manage to figure out how to fix that problem, let me know, because I encounter it often too.

Everything is typed perfectly, the version works on my uncle's MUGEN, but not on mine.

I've got about 4 characters that don't work, 200+ characters that work perfectly, and 3 that have the "blank syndrome."

I kinda think it's stupid how Mouser (the creator of the almighty Hanzo character in both World Heroes and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum) got rid of all his links to that character. :grr: He's the one character that can make my MUGEN complete.

What version do you have and what version does your uncle have?

Oh my god... I haven't heard of Mugen in a VERY long time O____O;; I used to have a gazillion Dragonball Z characters in there and some of those characters were brilliant! I had a Piccolo one that was simply amazing, he had a Power Level counter and I think in the hundred attacks, it was truely an awesome sight what he could do at a high power level.
I can remember having trouble like this too. My guess would be files missing or the characters were created souly for an older or newer version of Mugen. Is there even a Mugen Community left? I thought it was abandoned years ago.

It's still around, although it's hard to find. Many of the original websites are gone now, so it's harder to find working characters. Check the M.U.G.E.N. site on Wikipedia.

Well... it's still pretty dieing... But I see no reason why it should die :p It's incredibly customizable and you can add as much characters as you want :] Unfortunately I don't really play a lot of games >__>

At sometimes, it's a pretty easy step, for others, it's almost as hard as programming the characters.

There are many tutorials on the various MUGEN sites, I'd suggest checking MUGEN Fury's tutorial.

First, you need to download the characters themselves.
-Start with the M.U.G.E.N. Wikipedia entry. At the bottom of the page is a list of the largest Mugen websites around. Mugen Fury and Random Select are good places to start.
-Download a version of the Mugen engine itself. I recommend the latest DOS version, as the Windows version doesn't seem to work too well and the only other version is for Linux.
-Most characters are stored as ZIP files, so you'll need Winzip or other compression program.

Next, you'll need to organize your characters.
-Unzip the Mugen engine and save all your characters into the "Chars" folder.
-Unzip each character to their own individual folders. Make sure the folders have the same name as the character's .def file. For example, if you download Ryu from Street Fighter and he has a file named "Ryusf.def", make sure the folder containing the file is named "Ryusf".

Finally, you'll need to make sure the characters are used by the Mugen engine.
-Go into the Data folder and look for the file "select.def". Open it with a text editor, like Notepad.
-There will be instructions inside the "select.def" file, so just follow those.
