Planty's been having a bit of a rough day so I whipped up this one shot for her. Enjoy planty ^^ and I hope your day gets better.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Burnerman gazed out into the depths of the Undernet and sighed. It had been a long time since he had done anything to even remotely advance the cause of the Darkloids, and yet that was not what was bothering him. He found himself caring less and less about the whole cause and caring more about one part, or rather, one person. He sighed and glared at the Undernet as if it was his environment’s fault for falling victim to the emotions he so detested. “Dammit,” he hissed as he sat down on the edge of a server and let his feet dangle out over the darkened space below. “Dammit, dammit, dammit.”
“Loose again?” a cool voice asked behind him.
Burnerman didn’t even have to look up to know who was behind him. He merely sat there, still sulking as he felt the presence of the person who was the center of all his problems. “I didn’t loose,” Burnerman hissed. “I didn’t even fight.”
“Then why are you so upset?” the cool voice continued.
Burnerman felt him sit down next to him and he looked up to see Shademan looking at him with something akin to concern in his eyes. Burnerman shook his head and sighed, dismissing his observation as wishful thinking. “Personal… issues…” he finally said.
“I see,” Shademan said quietly. “Personal.”
Burnerman’s lips twisted as he glared at the darkened space below his dangling feet. “Hey, Shade?” he asked quietly.
Shademan continued to stare straight ahead but still replied to Burnerman’s question. “Yes?”
“Is…” Burnerman drifted off and sighed. He looked to the side and saw that Shademan was still staring straight ahead with a devil may care look about him. Burnerman smiled and shook his head, wondering just where this conversation was going to take him, and where he hoped it would take him. Finally he decided to go all in. “Is having emotion a bad thing, you think?”
Shademan turned to face Burnerman with a serious look on his face. Burnerman turned back to him, his blue eyes open wide. “It would depend on what kind of emotion,” Shademan said finally. “Dark emotion can be useful in battle but can hurt you if too powerful. Kindness can benefit a person but also bring their downfall. I’m not sure what kind of emotion you mean.”
Burnerman turned away from Shademan and shook his head. “I was wondering more about the emotion that humans like to call love.”
Shademan looked surprised at the rather odd outburst from Burnerman. “Love?” he asked, then chuckled. “I’m not sure what love means in net navis, to be honest. Or any emotion for that matter.”
“Hm?” Burnerman asked.
“Emotions…” Shademan said quietly. “Emotions are merely programmed bits of data within us to give us a response and reaction to environmental stimuli. Everything we feel is manipulated by our programming and our dark power.”
Burnerman frowned and brought his knees to his chest. He crossed his arms around his knees and rested his chin on top of his knees. “So, our emotions are tainted by the humans or by our dark energy?” he asked.
Shademan let out a slow breath and shook his head. “I don’t know, to be honest. Rather, I feel that my emotions are governed by our actions. It is better to not feel in this world, but if you must feel something, then I suggest that you keep it close and act on it. There’s not much reason to feel love where we are, so whatever you are talking about then it must be something rather special.”
Burnerman looked up at Shademan and smiled. “Maybe,” he admitted and stood up. “So what I hear you saying is that if I feel something then I should act on it?”
Shademan nodded. “I do not believe that a warrior such as yourself would feel something so powerful for no good reason. Whatever your purpose, if it’s true then maybe it means something.”
Burnerman gave Shademan a rare genuine smile. “I like that,” he said. Shademan was silently shocked into silence as he realized that Burnerman didn’t look insane, angry, wild or any of the things he usually looked like when he was smiling. If anything he looked like a normal navi, not a Darkloid. It was a rare glimpse into what Burnerman may have truly been at one point and he felt honored that Burnerman would let down his personal barriers for his sake.
“Has this answered your question?” he asked finally.
Burnerman nodded and walked up to Shademan. “It’s helped me a lot,” he said with a smile. Suddenly he stood on tip toe and planted a firm kiss on Shademan’s lips, startling him into a small shock. “I really do hope this is as special as you say,” he said quietly before leaving Shademan and phasing out of the server.
Shademan stood there for a few seconds, wide eyed and still. Eventually he got his wits about him and smiled. “Special emotions, huh?” he asked. “I wonder,” he murmured silently and left as well leaving the silent server in pursuit of the red navi.
Cute indeed.
For ficlets like this, I've noticed that you focus a lot more on the introspection, as opposed to other pieces that you have written that focus on the dialogue as a medium to develop the characters. Here, you've taken the focus off of the dialogue a touch, but it still remains in good balance between the self-reflection and the dialogue, and the characters benefit from that quite much.
Good job, and it's nice to see you write again.
