Comparison between Sonic the Hedgehog and Rockman characters

I sometimes do a little browsing into random topics, particularly ones concerning games and game characters. This included the characters from the ever popular Sonic the Hedgehog series. While studying the characters, I realized that some of the main characters were very similar to characters from the Rockman series (specifically, the Classic and EXE series). What I mean is, some of the Sonic characters kinda parallel some of the Rockman characters. Sometimes, this is in personality, while for others it could be in role status or methodology. Here's some clear examples:

Sonic = Rockman: Both are the heroes of their respective series.
Knuckles = Blues: Both are enigmatic, and come and go as they please. Plus, they aren't always allies with Sonic/Rockman. Blues has that cool whistle, though...
Shadow = Forte: Both are copies of Sonic/Rockman, and have similar abilities to the heroes. However, neither one is innately evil, just vain and selfish, thinking they are the best.
Silver = Duo: Both are super powerful and both wanna rid the world of evil. Silver, however, doesn't have god-like powers like Duo.

Keep in mind that I'm speculating a lot of this; I'm not a fanboy of Sonic, so I don't know everything there is to know about him or his series. If anyone wants to point out anything, be my guest.

Oh, and if this has already been addressed, I'm sorry for the repeat, but I never noticed any topics of this kind.

Color coordinating and stereotyping aren't exactly uncommon in any series. However, the characters do have rather significant differences. I could relate sonic characters to a very large number of characters from other series, but they still wouldn't be exactly alike.

You know I once found a webcomic about this. It had the matching characters of both series combine. Like a megaman/sonic combo. Lost the link or it went down. But there's not much in comparison.

Super Sonic/shadow - Super Saiyan Goku/vegeta etc

I've been looking into the Sonic/Rockman comparison too. There's another distinct similarity between the two series.

Looking at the EXE and Sonic X series, you have:
Chris = Netto: Both are human preteens who develope a strong friendship with the blue heroes. (Whether or not you want to count this as a similarity is up to you.)
Amy = Roll.EXE: Both girls are in love with Sonic/Rockman, and get a little jealous easily. Plus, they both pink. :D
Eggman = Wily: Both are evil geniuses who love all things robotic. And, of course, they both hate Sonic/Rockman's guts.

Similarities? As Cloud-kun touched on, there are always certain "roles" of sorts in these series.

You have your dashing hero, his human ally, the girlfriend, the rival, the best friend, the whiney one, the rich one, the lone wolf, the mad scientist/evil genious, etc. And red and blue, or some other opposing color scheme, are often used to represent a rivalry.

Sonic and Rockman is just one example. You could probably find simillar matches existing in other series, too.

Yeah. I've made a couple of jokes about the DBZGT/sonic comparison.
But Chris=Lan? There's one problem, not a lot of people dislike Lan.
But they are mostly a character. Like the hero and his sidekicks. You can do Sonic vs. DBZ easier then Megaman. I have with the Sliver=Trunks joke.

Can Chris be considered even cannon, he's not in the series. Then again there are so many versions of soinc, no one knows which one is real. BTW, I have noticed that sonic can paralell Megaman, but thinking on what others have said, these types of series generally follow that trend. We could even compare Astroboy to megaman...

Of course. I think he had that comparison before. And if some people count the comic as a canon, then chris is. He's a lot better then a soap opera in comic form.

I think Lord S Paradox and Cloud-kun touched it up. There are certain heroic archetypes (child, fighter, etc.), and some of them just lay together with Sonic and Rockman. You could compare them with tons and tons of other series and really get similar results. However, Sonic and Rockman are not entirely alike, so they do have their differences.

That's quite a hazardous comparison IMO.

Sonic is carefree. Rockman is absolutely not. Sonic likes adventure, even at risk of sometimes his friends, Rockman tries to not get anyone involved. Sonic is blunt and a little full of himself, Rockman is quite timid and silent. The only thing in common they have is that they're both blue and that they're heroes, but their characters are completely different. If I were to say anything, dare I'd say that WarRock is a little more like Sonic, Subaru is a little more like Rockman.

Knux and Blues? Blues is cool and cold. Knux is cool, but he is a DUMB HOTHEAD. And you all well know it.

Forte and Shadow are sort of alike, but that's because of the "dude in black with red eyes that seeks vengeance" rule. Shadow is more calm and composed than Forte. Forte likes to show off a lot, Shadow just stays in the back by himself.

But still, yes. These are just common stereotypes. As for Netto and friends? Main kid, cute girl, big burly angry dude, short kid/girl usually rich usually always hanging with big guy. In Ryuusei they split the last stereotype in two. Nerdy little kid, tall smuggy rich girl, but still both always hanging with the big guy.

Well it could technically depend on which rockman you compare sonic to. I know that they have more in common than being blue and being heros, with the exception of Rockman.exe, maybe...

Classic megaman. You do the basic version, the first one. I.E. classic and game version sonic.
