This is my reaction to certain characters, and quests in the game Final Fantasy III. I was really struck by Arc, and how he could dabble in the dark arts whilst afraid of ghosts....
Adjusting to a new job~
“Hey!”
Arc jumped at the sound of the voice, looking around the blackened hallway, startled. He let out a sigh; only Lunith. The Red Mage eyed him oddly.
“You okay, Arc?”
“Yeah,” Arc nodded, eyes slowly moving ‘round the room. A squeak behind him set his heart racing, and swiveling around, the group faced a giant rat!
Well, not giant, per se. They were all still under the effects of Mini; Arc really didn’t like the idea of him being bite-sized.
“Arc, cast fire on the rat!” Ingus nudged him sternly.
“Right!” Arc nodded, closing his eyes to focus on the spell that always sent shivers up and down his spine.
Magic, always so dangerous; when first he’d learned the spell, he’d been a tad scared to do it. ‘Let Lunith do it,’ he’d exclaimed. He always was afraid of calling on the powers of the elements, which, he figured, were really quite close to spirits and the like… and the group knew how he felt about ghosts.
The ball of fire fell from the ceiling, engulfing the mangy vermin; it hissed menacingly at the group, its ashen fur only slightly darker, singed. Arc cringed slightly as Refia darted forward towards the rat, jabbing at it, punching it, so comfortable with her new monk skills; so much more-so than he was with his.
A sudden scream! Refia came skidding back towards the group, arm sliced by a side winding slap from a tail; the group huddled around her, Lunith slightly concerned.
“Oh Ref, will you be al-”
“Let me handle this,” Ingus asserted, pushing Lunith brusquely aside. Holding up the arm up to the light of his staff, he eyed it sternly; it was deep, but he knew he could handle it. Focusing down on it, he closed his eyes, a white light pulsing from his fingertips. Muttering ‘Cure!’ inaudibly, he traced the wound, swiftly sealing it. Lunith let out a sigh of relief, Refia, smiling toughly, got to her feet, Arc… felt faint.
The sight of blood always made him uneasy, queasy even; he put a hand on the wall to keep himself steady, regaining his composure. Ingus seemed to be adjusting to his new job as a ‘White Mage’ heartily, so strange a past soldier could make the switch to cleric at the drop of a sword. Arc frowned.
He still wasn’t as confident as any of them-- Lunith, with his red coat and dual blades, Refia with her brass knuckles and her brusque katas, and even Ingus, who’d never even set a broken leg before, let alone healed a wound. All of them, so flexible, so courageous… and here he was, feeling sorry for them, afraid of his own job; a frown crossed his lips, but just a swiftly… he was tossed across the room!
The rat! They’d forgotten about it!
Turning fast as he could, his eyes darted from the rat to his comrades, huddled together, unguarded and unsure. They were in no position to fight it, and who would!? WHO!? Tears streamed down his face, but he wiped them away.
No. He would not let all his worries get the best of him. That was not what he’d gone on this journey with Lunith to do. He couldn’t let it end like that.
“FIRAGA!” a jet of flame sent the rat scurrying back to its hole.
Arc dashed to rejoin his friends, to tend to their wounds. He couldn’t let it end like this, he just couldn’t!
Fumbling with a potion, he poured it into Lunith’s mouth; sputtering, coughing, Lunith shook his head.
“Arc, calm down! What are you-”
“I thought… I thou- I couldn’t let it end…” Lunith eyed him, smiling, taking the effort to get to his feet.
“Let it end, eh? Of course not,” he plucked the hat off Arc’s head, smiling. “We still have a long ways to go,” and with that, he calmly walked towards the exit; a moment’s all it took- the frown on Arc’s face vanished.
“Hey, wait!” Arc called after him, chasing. “What about my hat!?”
Lying spread-eagled over Ingus’s chest, Refia chuckled at the two of them. “Those two, like kids they are.”
“Yeah,” Ingus added softly, “but when it really counts… they can sure be brave.”
Silently, Refia nodded, getting up to rejoin them and continue their quest. And Ingus rose too, eying the teasing children sternly, years of warrior experience showing on his youthful face.
“Right,” he chuckled. “I was but a kid too before I took up the sword. All it takes is one good cause,” he watched the two finish their scuffle, Arc slamming his hat back down of his head childishly, like nothing in the world would ever knock it off again.
And so they left the temple, Arc leading the group bravely, his passion, his desire to grow stronger, rekindled. _________________

I believe you've done an excellent job here, even though I don't actually know anything about the characters to which you are referring.
You effectively describe the character's emotions, and do a good job with the events leading up to the character's epiphany at the very end.
My complements. _________________ "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."
