Recurring nightmares that get scarier each time...

Maybe it's a mind-over-matter situation; the dream scared you once, then when it happened again, it got scarier because you were scared to begin with, and your fear just added on to itself.

Dreams can also tell you to improve yourself or make a change in some sort of way. Remember when Ebenezer Scrooge was selfish and those Christmas ghosts visited him in his dream? Maybe the dream is telling you watch too much Danny Phantom. A few times, my dreams told me I play too much videogames, so I cut down on them.

Dreams are dreams.

Whether you like it or not, nightmares happen. You can't will them away (without meds, anyway), and unfortunately, their meaning-- if there is a sole meaning at all-- differs with every opinion. Some think that dreams indicate the future. Others think that dreams are a reflection of your ordinary life. Obviously the latter is not the case, but nonetheless, many people have the same problem you do. And often those nightmares turn out to be nothing.

For the moment, you probably shouldn't worry about it. Yeah, I'm sure you still probably won't get a lot of sleep out of it, but eventually they should cease. Looking up dream symbolism on places like Google and Wikipedia would probably help you figure them out a bit more, if that helps. =\ Otherwise, there's not much you can do, as far as I know.

sorry, dreams usually don't symbolize anything.......They can reflect on stuff that has happened to you, or other stuff like that.... Don't read into dreams too much, or you will psycho analyze everything.

I'm pretty sure my dreams don't really WANT to become reality, if that's the hidden message they're trying to give me.

Because one of my most recent dreams that I can actually remember is that Nintendo made a US version of Zelda, with a really buff Link, and he was carrying around guns (screw the master sword and shield, link's SERIOUS now). And he blew up Epona with a rocket launcher.

Also, in another dream, I got crushed by Optimus Prime.....so yeah, I tend not to read too much into whatever I can remember from my dreams ^^;

X.

"Today many scientists believe that dreams are the brain's way of cleansing itself and allowing the brain's complex chemistry to stabilize. Dreams also allow the emotions to quiet down. According to this theory, without them we would simply overheat. Recent experiments with "dream withdrawal" suggest that if a person deprived of dreams begins to show psychotic tendencies while awake. In the light of this fact some scientists have proposed that the function of dreams is to allow for a time of quiet insanity. It is not sleep that is necessary for well-being, but dreams. According to this theory, we do not remember dreams because there is no need too; dreams are just psychological junk."

"Pretty much everyone has them at one time or another. The majority of children have nightmares between the ages of three or four and seven or eight. These nightmares appear to be a part of normal development, and do not generally signal unusual problems. Nightmares are less common in adults, though studies have shown that they too may have nightmares from time to time. About 5-10% have nightmares once a month or more frequently."

Nightmares can be caused by many factors including:
* Illnesses
* Anxiety or stress
* Loss of a family member or friend
* Certain medications or the sudden withdrawal of them

I know this reply is very late and that I am digging up an older topic but I wanted to thank everyone who replied for their advice.

I also have recieved some very valuable advice from someone else which, although maybe it sounds strange, really helped me finding out what my dreams could be about.

I am very serious about what I am going to write. I don't know if it is wise for me to post this but I hope that even writing it down will make me feel somewhat better.

I had already forgotten about this for years but when I was younger, around 11-12 years (I don't exacty remember) I became friends with another kid who stayed for two weeks at his grandma in my city. I am really ashamed of myself for what I've done, but my other classmates from school really disliked him and wanted to, well beat him up. I wasn't really popular on school at that time and sometimes I was hit by them as well, when I heard of their plans to get him around a special time of the day I didn't warn him. I was afraid my classmates would blame me if he found out about it. So I didn't tell him and I played a ball game with him knowing all too well how this would end.

After this I really tried hard to forget about it and maybe that explains why I haven't thought about this for years. I really feel so ashamed of myself, I feel like I have betrayed him, that I just turned him over to my classmates who beat him up. I warned other people on the streets when they were closing in on him and this way preventing it would get out of hand. But I still feel as if I was the one who beat him. I've never seen him again, his grandma died 5 years ago and I have no idea were he lives. He has no other family in the area were I live. I feel so terrible about this. Looking back I should have done things differently but that is very easy to say although I really wish I did. I feel like such a coward.

I almost know for sure that my dreams were somehow pointing at this. Something I've tried to hide but now it shows up again. I don't know how I can solve this. I just have to hope these dreams will end eventually.

Well, hopefully writing all that you have here is a form of therapy that can help you get some of these issues out of your system. Everyone has those "would've, could've, should've" events in their lives, and often they do haunt our dreams. I'm no different in having dreams in which I thought were too real. I've also had recurring ones that I believed were visions of the future, showing my unfortunate demise. Hasn't happened yet, thankfully.

But most likely your dreams aren't prophetic in any manner. They're influenced by things you've recently read or seen, events in your life, things you're keeping to yourself and never let out, etc. Lots of times when you're dreaming about being in pain, it could be nothing more than the fact that your face is buried in your pillow and you aren't breathing properly. I know I've woken up with scratches all over me, wondering when the heck I got all of them. (Off the record...fighting aliens who try to kidnap me at night... Laughing kidding.)

If you really think that event is what's behind the nightmares, and you feel like you need to make up for it, try to figure out something you can do as some sort of repentence. Just because you don't think you can do anything for him anymore doesn't mean you can't do something similar to help someone else. Sometimes that will work in making you feel better and it can help you put this event behind you.

I am also interested in how the dreams work. It's like being in a paradise, where you can sometimes do super-natural things, fly a jet-pack or do Kung Foo on somebody. It's like a sweet escape from reality...

And I agree about that they reflect on things that we have experienced, like I am a character in Diablo II: LOD or am walking around in my home city where everything can happen. However, I also know that dreams can mostly give you the experience that you've never had in reality. Take love, for example (that refers to singles). I dream I am attracted to a specific girl, although in reality I build a low wall around myself .

Enough about me, what interests me about the dreams is what is it you mostly dream about. I'll make a short list about my frequent dreams:

  • Mostly do I dream that I am in certain locations I've been, more or less. That includes my current home town, locations that symbolize Gotland, Stockholm and Moscow, which is my birth location.
  • Inside the cities, subways are one of my favored locations. In reality, I haven't seen much trains, but I love being at the stations and behold.
  • What do I mostly do? I am on adventures, running and fighting...

Show your examples, I am curious to know!
