Alright, this topic is exactly as the title states- which refers to any crazy sceince experements you have tried, seen on youtube, or were thinking why some people even try some of these things (pyro-maniacs , ect. )
So, basically, what was the craziest science reaction you have tried, seen or saw in a demonstartion in science class?
I know what i've seen in some cases is just the defifnition of 'mad scientists' or things that are classified as 'crazy, but fun.' _________________

I have alot... some great and some not so great... here goes
Okay, the first "Science Experiment" I tried was at home when I was 7, and it involved alot of dirt, Bi-Carb Soda mixed with water in a plastic tube, buried in said dirt, and pouring Vinegar coloured red with food colouring into it: Instant volcano!!
I learnt how to do that from a home chemistry set that I got in bookclub The name was great too, "Icky, Sticky, Foamy, Slimey, Ooie, Gooey Chemistry".
When I was in grade 8 (1st year high school in QLD, Australia) The Lab techie guy Jason chucked some Dry Ice into 2L coke bottles with some water, screwed on the lid, chucked it in a metal bucket, and ran hell for leather away from it. 3 seconds later we get a nice big bang and the coke bottle explodes.
In my summer break between year 9 and 10 I went to a science camp, the most memorable experiment (or torture) was our demonstrator dipping a rubber duck in liquid Nitrogen and throwing it into the wall, shattering it!!
In year 10 we got to see a Pig's Heart and Lungs!!! It was pretty cool, and two students got chosen to go and help the demonstrator. Luke was so disgusting about it. On TV at the time, the government had been showing ads to put off smokers, including squeezing out all the gunk that accumulates in the Aorta, the main artery that runs into the heart. Well, Luke thought he'd try the same thing with one of the tubes that he could see... it turned out to be the oesophagus, cos all this green stuff came out. Pretty gross.
Late last year, my friends saw this thing on youtube where you drink a whole heap of coke or another softdrink and then swallow a mentos whole. Wait a few seconds and then the guy projectile vomits... and they decided to see if it works. It didn't, which rather disappointed them. I personally, was glad it didn't work.
And the two funniest moments....
When Mr Roberts in my 11th year, chucked a large piece of Sodium into a glass container of water, and the container shattered from the reaction.
AND
When Mrs Cantrill, my year 8 science teacher, lit the gas tap on fire by accident. _________________ "There is no coincidence, only Hitsuzen" Yuko, xxxHolic

Oh, honestly I've been wanting to try that Mentos-and-Coke thing for a while now XD Not the projectile vomit one (which, by the way, works better if you keep the coke in your mouth when you put in the Mentos) but the one where you drop a Mentos into a bottle of (diet?) Coke. Insta-fountain! XD
Aside from that, I remember one science experiment I did when I was younger, with a chemistry set I had. I don't remember what the components are now, but if you put together two white (well, one of them was white, don't remember the other) compounds, when they mix they turn blue. I remember doing that for my science class once, and one guy accused me of cheating xDD
I've got better ones, I just...don't remember them right now ^^; Gimme a couple hours XD;;;... _________________

there was a few that amazed me
1)it was our science teacher who was telling us his story.one day with his friend they decided to throw beer in the fire(with their glass container unopened)they thrown it in and it explode a few seconds later.then they go get their friend who wasn't there and they thrown another one.....nothing happen.so they wait a few minutes and leave letting the fire die on its own.while walking away they hear this big boom which came from the fireplace
2)this one is a bit suspicious but my science teacher said he saw it from his own eyes.when he was a kid he went to a science fair and there was this guy at a booth, playing with liquid nitrogen.he said that the guy put some liquid nitrogen in his mouth and spit it at people(which evaporated immediatly)
3)this one i saw from my own eyes.thoe eyes came and i don't know what they had done to the bottle but they put it on the running track and one dare to open the bottle.to my surprise, the coke was rising really high in the sky..(a good 60 cm in the air)and it did it for a good 5 seconds _________________ don't mind me.I'm quite quiet.

Something funny that happened in one of my friend's Uni lectures...
The lecturer put an earthworm in a glass of whisky, and left it there for the entire lecture. At the end he grabbed a pair of tweezers and pulled it out. The earthworm was disintergrating all over the place. He waves it in the air, turns to the class and says:
"Now what does this tell you?"
To which a guy from the middle of the group yells out:
"That if we drink loads of whisky, we'll never get worms!!" _________________ "There is no coincidence, only Hitsuzen" Yuko, xxxHolic

Well, i'll say one thing- I don't believe anyone will ever notice a worm sitting in a chair at an AA meeting XD. Tequila+worms=disaster (or dead worms). Yes, it is kinda gross, but amusing at the same time.
Here's my wall shame for now-
I took borax, food coloring, water, and guar gum (sp?) and mixed them together. They quickly combined to form an oozy substance that was slighly sticky. A little gross? Yup. Fun to make? Of course.
Anything that involves hydrochloric acid is automatically crazy in my book.
Here's another one- A couple weeks ago in science class, there was a video where a professor combined two products in order to make somthing happen. He had a jack-o-lantern and was about to pour the substances into it. As soon as he said "happy haloween", he pourded the mixture in, causing the pumpkin to foam out of the mouth hole.
Afterwards, my teacher says "There's a rabid pumpkin."
I've got more- i'll post them soon ^^. _________________

I don't really see how the things mentioned here constitute experiments. They're more like demonstrations of established principles.
That said, the best experiment I've seen in my opinion was comparing different methods of introducing a plasmid coding for the IBV-S protein into chickens, testing their ability to induce an immune response with varying amounts of IFN-α and their efficacy versus traditional vaccination methods.
I think I liked mostly because it was the one and only time I could put Photoshop to practical, professional use. (No, I didn't do anything unethical. They have the means to detect that.) _________________ *placeholder* |

Impressive. Hope you got that published somewhere.
There is a lot of debate over what actually constitutes a science experiment; the word "experiment" implies going into uncharted territory, so to speak, as opposed to following traditional, already confirmed phenomena. Given that definition, the only experiment I've done was research into an optimal strategy for an antiquated game show. Yes, it is a little odd, but it was still quite mathematical in the end, and it was nice to see what things I could come up with other than chanting "Big Bucks, No Whammies!" and hoping for the best, or taking advantage of a very weak random number generator. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! I don't recall if it ever made it into publication. I didn't do any actual experimental work, so whether or not it did get published, my name wouldn't be on the study.
As for the definition of experiment, it doesn't necessarily have to do anything new; it could just be a repeat of previous experiments. Even tests for demonstrative purposes could count as experiments as long as a certain methodology is followed that allows for exact repetition and from which valid conclusions may be drawn. I understand that the colloquial definition is much looser than what would be considered a formal experiment, but no offense to anyone, it's aggravating all the same, because there will inevitably be large numbers of people that don't see the distinction.
Edit: Alas, this year's Inocentada Sangrienta prank is kinda unoriginal, and a bit on the annoying side. Ehh, it's just one day. Which reminds me... _________________ *placeholder* |

Yes. I agree. What kind of typing is this? Valley style? There are few things I dislike more then valley style. Or maybe it's surfer. I just don't like hearing the word like so much. |

You had to spoil it, didn't you Izumi. Now my quickly created sig makes it look like I just did it because you told me to make it!! Not cool. Screw chillin' out here, I'm off to go party at the mall with Ghengis Khan and Baberaham Lincoln. Oh wait, that last one was like so totally Wayne's World... _________________ Avatar art thanks to toberboobap, animated gif thanks to Dr. Wily II

That's true- I haven't really tried any new things yet. i only intended for it to be demonstartions of established principals, only could not find the correct term for that.
That sounds like an interesting experiment, nontheless. _________________
