Wait, what were the wonders before? But at least the pyramids are like a super great wonder or something. They're better then a great wonder. |

Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, all of which, sans the pyramid, were destroyed at varies point during history. _________________

Well, the "wonders" are pretty much a "must-see" stuff in the world.
You can't go on a "world's wonders tour" with only the pyramids left standing, can you?
Besides, the voting for the new 7 wonders started around 5 years ago, and the votes come from all over the world. I heard the Brazilians rallied for the Christ statue of theirs. Other countries had their entries, too, and was narrowed down to the best 20 (?) candidates.
The pyramids got an automatic spot for survival.
This wasn't as fickle as the Pluto issue, and very timely.
As far as I know, all but the pyramids were gone by the 20th century. Setting new ones on the 21st century is good enough timing, isn't it?
EDIT:
Just wanted to add this: The old wonders will be remembered as the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World". They're not the present day's seven wonders, but they were -- a long long time ago.
Again, unlike the Pluto thingy, where it's suddenly not a planet, and its former status as one was erased from textbooks _________________ TGS 2007:MISSED! T_T |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Seven_Wonders
Allow me to quote
Quote: | The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in a press release[1] on June 20, 2007 reaffirmed that it has no link with the initiative, which it says would reflect "only the opinions of those with access to the internet".
A paragraph from the press release reads "There is no comparison between Mr Weber’s mediatised campaign and the scientific and educational work resulting from the inscription of sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The list of the 7 New Wonders of the World will be the result of a private undertaking, reflecting only the opinions of those with access to the internet and not the entire world. This initiative cannot, in any significant and sustainable manner, contribute to the preservation of sites elected by this public."

So, yeah. I don't think it's really offical, if this is to be believed.
edit: ...wtf is up with my quote there? *fixes it best she can* _________________

More than just timing...more like a 7/7/07 gimmick! Like a bunch of lucky weddings and Live Earth and Prince's day long concerts...
Yeah, even though the UN didn't approve, they got Neil Armstrong and J-Lo to attend the announcement! And had Ben Kingsley and Hillary Swank host it. [sarcasm] Doesn't that just scream importance? [/sarcasm] Yet I saw nothing of this event on TV and only a brief mention on the news tonight. Guess the list isn't bad, but I don't know if I'd classify them all as "wonders." I'd agree with NG and say it's not quite the same as Pluto being declassified. It's just more of a promotional gimmick. _________________ Avatar art thanks to toberboobap, animated gif thanks to Dr. Wily II

Probably because July 7th always has been the most-wanted day for weddings in Japan.
I ignored most of the superstition-related stuff in the news, too.
I only found out about the voting in a news tidbit two days before the deadline, myself.
But, then, lots of important stuff get announced a day or two before their deadlines.
But, 7's aside, I think it's a timely move.
I wonder if other 7-related stuff happened 30 years ago, too.
I mean, there were four 7's instead of just three, then.
But that's another topic _________________ TGS 2007:MISSED! T_T |

They aren't that bad. But how come nothing from the US got anywhere near the top. Just because of you know who leader and the you know what event in you know where in the middle of the east.
That's unfair right there. |

Three words I didn't really want to say but here they are. Bush War Iraq. Put those in order and you'll see why I found it just a little bit annoying. |

Uhm. What exactly does the US have that would be worthy of being one of the "New Seven Wonders"?
And if you honestly think that just because of the war the US didn't make it in with anything...well....
That's stupid. _________________ all i ever wanted was the world |

Well, I don't think that just because we have an idiot leader and a war is going on, that's why there were no US "wonders" to make the list. There are how many countries in the world and only 7 or fewer had a shot to be included. So we had China, Jordan, Mexico, Peru, India, Rome, and Brazil. That leaves out PLENTY of other countries besides the US like Australia, France, Japan, Russia, [insert your country here]. Heck, the Statue of Liberty was on the list, but technically, it's a French marvel.
And looking at the other finalists, I mostly think the ones that won are the most marvelous in terms of design and grandeur. They've stood the test of time and are very recognizable. I think you could argue for the Easter Island heads or Stonehenge over the statue of Christ the Redeemer, due to the former being around for so much longer. But the message behind the Christ statue and being one of the most recently built, no doubt helped. And I don't think multiple statue wonders would have a shot compared to the other architecture.
The whole world had plenty of time to vote by the sounds of things. If the US didn't have anything, it's more that we can't match the splendor of some of the wonders that other cultures have produced. Not because Curious George is playing G.I. Joe for waaaaaaaaayy too long and is being told to come inside before he gets grounded. _________________ Avatar art thanks to toberboobap, animated gif thanks to Dr. Wily II

Indeed.
There's also that chance that those from the US that voted didn't vote for US wonders.
Personally, if a "wonder" from my country turned up in the top 20 list and the Easter Island heads are in the list, too, I'd vote for the heads.
The site says they're doing the "Natural Wonders" next.
The Grand Canyon'll get my vote if it makes it to the finals.
I wonder if the Bermuda Triangle qualifies, though..... _________________ TGS 2007:MISSED! T_T |

The only thing I'll say is that I heard that somewhere. That's why I said it and that's what I meant. |
