Ehh, SETI has been around for a good long while. The idea is that radio telescopes are to be used to in the hopes of finding radio signals that show some sign of intelligent intent. They collect loads of cosmic radio data, and then use computers to filter out mounds of chaff in hopes of finding a grain of wheat. If you're inclined, you can assist the effort by lending your computer's idle resources to SETI@home (though personally I prefer Folding@home and its intended purpose).
I have two problems with SETI. First, even if we do find extraterrestrial messages, we still have no immediately obvious means to figure out what they're trying to say or how to respond back to them, so it's all very likely to be in vain even if we do hit that longshot target of finding intelligent life out there. Second, unless we do happen to to get very very lucky and establish contact with extraterrestrials, SETI has no tangible benefits - it's just a waste of radio telescopes that could be otherwise set for use in radio astronomy. _________________ *placeholder* |
