Anyone excited for the new DS? Some stats:
Overall size has been reduced—DSi is 12% or 2.6 millimeters slimmer than the Lite.
Comes with an external 0.3 Megapixel camera [for 640 x 480 pixel pictures] and a VGA camera located on the hinge, directed towards the user. You’ll be able to edit pictures using the touchscreen. [Yeah that’s right ... 2 cameras]
Full music playback functionality, including adjustable pitch and playback speed.
Both screens have been expanded to 3.25 inches. [Slimmer body and bigger screen ... nice]
SD memory card slot is included, and there’ll be on-board memory also. [Say wha?]
Will ship with an built-in Nintendo DS web browser. [So that’s why the Nintendo DS Browser was quietly discontinued!]
DSi will allow users to download games from DSWare, a new service that operates with Wii Points—or, as they are now known, Nintendo Points.
Logging onto DSWare for the first time will grant users 1,000 free Nintendo Points.
DSWare comes in four pricing categories: free (!), 200 Nintendo Points, 500 Nintendo Points, and 800 Nintendo Points.
Will come in lovely matte white and matte black. Begone, foul fingerprints that have taunted us so! [Hmm, so all the newer colors after that will be matte as well]

Moving to Anime, Manga, and Games since it seems to fit better in there. _________________

There's also no W-slot, meaning no backwards compatibility with GBA games, though I think it may be possible to download GB games at least over Wifi.
Still, I prefer my handhelds to be gaming systems, not multimedia devices. I'll stick with my DS Lite, fingerprints and all. _________________ ' I don't care if the buzz isn't real- I can roleplay being drunk!'

I'm more excited about the homebrew opportunities. An SD slot as well as onboard storage? It'll be interesting to see what people come up with. _________________ Avatar by Tabby (of my NetNavi, GuincoolMind.EXE) : : :

I don't own a DS Lite because it's uncomfortable to hold compared to my original DS. In the DIi is better on my hands, I'll consider it. Quite frankly, I don't really need my DS to have -two- cameras. _________________ (\ ºvº\ (\

I think the SD slot will increase piracy as stated in other forums, which I don't mind, but removing the GBA slot was a shot in their own foot. They just eliminated guitar hero from the ds as well as any features for ds sequels of GBA games, mainly Im thinking of pokemon. Im sure they will make some sort of device to plug in somewhere that can enable GBA slot stuff to work. I for one am excited about the VC for DS. I'd love to play old school GBC games on my DS...Oh wait, I already can |

I have mixed emotions about it. On the one hand I like the idea of a VC for the DS, but on the other hand I hate how the W-slot is gone. I guess it does not really matter to me since there is no way I will have enough spare cash for one anytime soon anyway. _________________ Name shortened from Serenade.exe |

Seriously? Because I can't; I've tried, but the old GBC cartridges just don't seem to fit the GBA slot on the DS (acronyms ahoy!).
As much as I would love to play Dragon Warrior III on my DS (i.e. the GBC game in question) I'd much rather Square-Enix just do a remake of it like they're doing for DQ 4.
As for the DSi itself, I don't really see the need for the camera and music player (though they've mentioned that the camera could be used for games, and that will be interesting to see), but my interest in being able to download and hold games on it has piqued my interest. Now if only they hadn't sacrificed the GBA slot; I'd really rather not pay to download games I already own just so I can play them on the go. :/ _________________ Stuck In The Middle With You; a Metroid and Halo crossover

Indeed.
The DS is backwards compatible, but only to an extent--it cannot play GBC games or anything earlier. Only the GBA can do that, and even then it is slightly clunky.
I get the feeling that these changes were prompted by the relative success of the PSP and its media capabilities. Frankly, if I wanted an MP3 player, I'd get one in addition to my DS, and I'd like to keep my DS as just a gaming device, thank you. No need for the additional bells and whistles. The DS Lite I have used for at least a year now, and I still enjoy it very much. _________________ Today, these three players are after Big Bucks! I'm not found of the camera and MP3 ideas but while the W slot isn't so bad, the rest is good. Can we just drop the first two? Not really needed. |

I'm starting to hate Handhelds now, lol
First the Original DS, which is amazing and I still own to this day, then the DS Lite which was smaller, nice screen, and had some new features that the original didnt have, now this thing! GAH
Bout as bad as the PSP and all of it's versions, giving more to the newer one and screwing those with older versions.....sigh* _________________ -Follow me on Twitch.tv-

I get the feeling the PSP has very little to do with it. There were moments when the PSP had its sales spurts, but by and large, it never usurped the DS.
It looks to me like Nintendo might be bracing itself against Apple's coming tide. Though a Nintendo official has stated he's really not concerned about it, it's undeniable that Apple is edging into the portable gaming market. _________________ *placeholder* |

Yes but the iPhone is no where near as good as a DS. Really now let's take a look at it. People don't use the iPhone for mostly games do they? I'd use it for a phone/internet. Not games. |

Actually, it's a very strong contender, in a lot of ways. However, the iPhone isn't the biggest threat here. As you've said, it's a phone and people will predominantly use it as such. The iPod touch is the wildcard here. Apple is very clearly setting itself up to take on Nintendo and Sony here. Just look at Steve Jobs' latest keynote, the "Funnest iPod ever" marketing, and the fact that major game studios are developing for the App Store.
The iPod touch in the same price range as the current portable gaming contenders, and the bang for buck is second to none. The PSP can't hold a candle to it in terms of media and browsing. The DS is facing stiff competition in the gimmicky-but-ultimately-very-fun controls department. As far as raw processing power and potential graphics quality go, both the PSP and the DS get a run for their money. Toss in the App Store, and you've got a device set to dish out some serious pain against its competition.
This updated DS reeks of Nintendo just trying to bridge the gap between it and the iPod touch before Apple opens the floodgates. _________________ *placeholder* |

Well, you know there's a good reason Nintendo has lasted as so long as they have in any kind of game business. They know what they're doing. |

That's what everyone thought about Sega. Now they're making shoddy-to-decent games and cheapo PMPs.
Nintendo has lately been milking the Wii and DS. Though I hope not to imply that Nintendo's little ecosystem isn't a viable gaming platform, they're putting out way more cheap software toys than they should be, sometimes at the expense of developing actual games.
It's really hard to say what the future might hold, only that it'll be interesting to see how things pan out. _________________ *placeholder* |

Sega had problems. One was named Sony. And Nintendo started doing little toys. Actually they started with cards but, they did make a lot of little toys. And there are a lot of decent games. |

As far as I am aware most of the shoddy titles are 3rd party titles; not exactly Nintendo's fault there. _________________
