Hi guys,
just for curiosity, is someone here contributing with distributed computing projects like World Community Grid or Seti?
For anyone not knowing what this stuff is about, long story short, you "borrow" your unused PC power for helping with very heavy calculation.
Building a single PC able to manage an huge amount of data would require very powerfull equipment, so those projects decided to divide data into smaller pieces computable by any home computer, laptop or whatever.
Some projects could even use the GPU (the video card) to speed up the process up to 10 times.
The main program, called BOINC, is made so that would compute the pieces (called "cobblestones") only when your PC is idle, so is not harmfull for your PC's performance.
Right now, i'm mainly involved in those projects:
SETI@home: project aiming to found a reply to the message we (the Earth) sent to space years ago http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/
Einstein@home: aiming to find new stars http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/
World Community Grid: sponsored by IBM, aiming to find solutions like cures for cancer, AIDS, find more efficient materials for producing energy and so on http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org
PrimeGrid: aiming to find bigger and bigger prime numbers http://www.primegrid.com/
BOINC homepage: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/
Anyone wanting to help is welcome ^_^ _________________ Sardinia is not Italy!
